More than a year after a Utah mother and her 8-year-old son were found suffering from gunsH๏τ wounds inside their Saratoga Springs home, prosecutors have formally charged the woman’s teenage son in connection with both deaths.

The 16-year-old, who was 15 when the alleged crimes occurred, is facing two counts of aggravated murder and one count of obstruction of justice in Utah’s 4th District Juvenile Court. Prosecutors have also indicated that they intend to seek a transfer of the case to adult district court. Because the suspect was 15 at the time of the alleged offenses, the case initially had to proceed through juvenile court before prosecutors could seek to have it handled in adult court.

The victims were 44-year-old Jessica Orton Lyman and her 8-year-old son, Eli Painter. Police responded to the family’s Saratoga Springs home on March 28, 2025, after Lyman’s teenage daughter returned to the residence and discovered her mother and younger brother with gunsH๏τ wounds. Eli was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the scene. Lyman was taken to a hospital in critical condition and died several days later, on March 31.

At the time, another child of Lyman was also inside the home. According to the charging documents, the then-15-year-old told investigators that he had been asleep in his bedroom and had not heard the shooting, his sister’s frantic 911 call or the arrival of police and emergency personnel.

The investigation, however, continued to raise questions about that account.

According to prosecutors, surveillance footage from a neighboring home captured an argument at approximately 11:30 p.m. on March 27. Investigators said the voices on the recording were consistent with those of the teenager and the two victims. The charging documents state that a woman’s voice, identified by investigators as consistent with Lyman’s, could be heard shortly before several gunsH๏τs were recorded.

Investigators also documented physical and forensic evidence that prosecutors say connects the teenager to the crime. Court documents allege that gunsH๏τ residue was detected on several pieces of clothing ᴀssociated with him. Investigators also reported finding DNA consistent with the teen’s DNA beneath Lyman’s fingernails and on the waistband of the shorts she was wearing. Additional biological evidence consistent with his DNA was reportedly identified in the bed where the victims were found.

Police had already been examining the teenager’s activities before the formal charges were filed. Search warrants that were unsealed during the investigation described handwritten material in his bedroom referring to forensic evidence, including DNA and firearm testing. Another handwritten note allegedly contained the phrase, “This is a murder story.” Investigators also recovered messages and other digital evidence as they attempted to reconstruct the events surrounding the killings.

Another important part of the investigation involved surveillance footage recorded after the shooting. Prosecutors allege that video showed a masked person moving through the neighborhood during the early morning hours. Investigators said the individual’s height and build were consistent with the teenager and that some of the clothing appeared similar to items ᴀssociated with him. Authorities also examined possible routes that could have been used to dispose of a firearm, including areas near the Jordan River. FBI personnel and local investigators later searched the river and nearby areas for evidence.

The investigation lasted roughly 17 months before police announced the teenager’s arrest on August 14, 2026. Saratoga Springs Police Chief Andrew Burton said detectives had executed dozens of search warrants, reviewed extensive surveillance footage, interviewed numerous people and collected hundreds of pieces of evidence. Some forensic testing took considerable time, and investigators continued examining new information as laboratory results became available. The FBI, Utah State Crime Laboratory, West Jordan Police Department and Utah County Sheriff’s Office Evidence Team ᴀssisted with the investigation.

Police did not immediately make an arrest after the killings, despite identifying the teenager as someone investigators needed to examine closely. Earlier search-warrant documents had already revealed concerns about evidence found in his clothing and his online communications. Investigators continued gathering additional forensic information before prosecutors determined that there was sufficient probable cause to move forward with charges.

The case now enters a new legal phase. Prosecutors have requested that the teenager be held without bail and have formally stated their intention to have the case transferred to adult district court. The aggravated-murder charges are first-degree felonies. Under the charging document, prosecutors say an aggravated-murder conviction could carry an indeterminate prison term of at least 25 years and potentially life in Utah State Prison if the case ultimately proceeds in adult court.

The question of whether the teenager will actually be tried as an adult has not yet been decided. A juvenile court process will determine whether the case can be transferred, meaning the formal charges do not by themselves establish that the teenager will face an adult trial.

The families of Jessica Lyman and Eli Painter have spent more than a year waiting for answers. After the arrest, the Orton family said the development represented an important step while emphasizing that no legal proceeding could undo the loss of Jessica and Eli. Relatives described Jessica as a devoted mother and Eli as a loving child whose life was cut short. They said they intended to remember the two victims for the lives they lived and the relationships they shared, rather than only for the circumstances of their deaths.

Despite the arrest and formal charges, the investigation is not considered finished. Police have said detectives continue to conduct follow-up interviews and examine additional information. Prosecutors will now have to present their evidence through the court process, while the defense will have an opportunity to challenge the state’s allegations.

For the families, the case has already marked 17 months of uncertainty. The arrest provides a significant development in the investigation into the deaths of Jessica Lyman and Eli Painter, but the legal process ahead will determine how the allegations are ultimately resolved.
