Portuguese authorities, working with German investigators, carried out a new series of searches in the Algarve region of southern Portugal as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. The operation was launched following a formal request from German prosecutors and focused on land near the coastal resort where the British toddler vanished nearly two decades earlier.

Madeleine McCann was three years old when she disappeared on the evening of 3 May 2007 from an apartment at the Ocean Club holiday complex in Praia da Luz. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, had been dining nearby with friends at the time. The case quickly became one of the most widely reported missing-child investigations in modern Europe, involving Portuguese, British and later German authorities.

The June 2025 searches were ordered under a European Investigation Order issued by the public prosecutor’s office in Braunschweig, Germany. That office had previously named German national Christian Brueckner as the primary suspect in the case. Brueckner, a convicted offender who has consistently denied any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance and has never been charged in connection with it, was serving a prison sentence in Germany for the rape of an elderly woman in the same Algarve area in 2005.

According to Portugal’s Judicial Police (PJ), the operation ran between 2 and 6 June 2025 within the municipality of Lagos. Investigators concentrated on a stretch of land lying between Praia da Luz — the civil parish where Madeleine disappeared — and properties ᴀssociated with Brueckner at the time of the incident. Reports indicated that teams examined multiple plots of land, including scrubland, abandoned structures, wells and other sites. Officers were observed using tools such as shovels, pickaxes and ground-penetrating equipment. German Federal Criminal Police (BKA) personnel participated alongside Portuguese officers, with any material recovered due to be transferred to German authorities for further examination.

The Metropolitan Police in London confirmed awareness of the searches but stated that British officers were not present on site. They offered to provide support to international colleagues if required. This was not the first physical search in the region in recent years; a previous operation in May 2023 had focused on an inland reservoir but yielded no significant findings.

After several days of activity, the June 2025 search concluded. Contemporary accounts indicated that no major discoveries were publicly announced at the time, although the full results of any forensic testing of collected material were not immediately released. German prosecutors confirmed that procedural measures related to the case were taking place in Portugal but provided limited additional detail.

As of 2026, Christian Brueckner remains the individual formally identified by German authorities as a suspect, though no charges concerning Madeleine McCann have been filed against him. The broader investigation continues to involve cooperation between Portuguese, German and British law-enforcement agencies. The June 2025 operation marked one of the more extensive coordinated searches conducted in the Algarve in the later stages of the case, reflecting persistent efforts to examine locations connected to the prime suspect nearly 18 years after Madeleine’s disappearance.
