Pope Leo XIV Urges Renewed Commitment to Peace and Development in the Sahel!lh

In a pᴀssionate appeal at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV called for renewed international commitment to peace, stability, and human development in the Sahel region of Africa, warning that millions continue to suffer from violence, poverty, displacement, and humanitarian crises.

The Pope expressed particular concern for communities affected by armed conflict, terrorism, food insecurity, and climate-related hardships across parts of the Sahel. He urged global leaders not to overlook the struggles of families living amid instability and economic despair.

“The people of the Sahel must not be abandoned,” Pope Leo declared. “Peace cannot exist without justice, opportunity, and respect for human dignity.” He emphasized that long-term solutions require not only security measures but also investments in education, healthcare, agriculture, and youth employment.

The Pontiff also praised humanitarian workers, missionaries, and local religious communities serving in dangerous conditions to support vulnerable populations. He highlighted the importance of interreligious dialogue and cooperation in resisting extremism and rebuilding trust within divided societies.
Concluding his remarks, Pope Leo XIV prayed for reconciliation and hope throughout the region, calling on the international community to work together so that the Sahel may become “a land of peace, solidarity, and renewed human flourishing.”
