PART 2: THE BOX BENEATH HIS BED

PART 2: THE MAN WHO KNEW HER SECRET
Emily stared at the sealed envelope in her hands.
Her father’s handwriting was unmistakable. He had written her name carefully, as if he had known this moment would come.
“Who is outside?” she demanded.
Vicky stepped between Emily and the door.
“His name is Daniel. He was your father’s closest business partner.”
“Then why does he want to stop me from reading this letter?”
Vicky looked away.
Before she could answer, the front door opened.
A tall man in his late fifties entered the house. His expensive coat was covered in dust, and his expression was anything but friendly.
“Emily,” he said calmly. “I’m sorry for your loss.”
She held the envelope тιԍнтly.
“Did you know about this box?”
Daniel glanced at the open chest. For a brief moment, his face changed.
“Your father should have destroyed those papers.”
Emily’s stomach тιԍнтened.
“Why?”
“Because some truths don’t bring peace. They only destroy families.”
Emily refused to back down.
“Then perhaps it’s time someone told me the truth.”
Daniel sighed and pulled a chair closer.
“Twenty-five years ago, your father made an agreement with a woman named Eleanor. She was young, unmarried, and desperate. Your father promised to protect her child.”
Emily felt a chill run through her.
“The baby in the pH๏τograph?”
Daniel nodded.
“That child was never supposed to be part of this family.”
Emily looked at Vicky.
“Who was the baby?”
Neither answered.
She finally broke the seal on her father’s letter.

The first lines read:
“My dearest Emily,
If you are reading this, then I have failed to tell you something important. There is a truth about your birth that I should have shared long ago. I wanted to protect you, but my silence may have caused more pain than the truth ever could.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
She continued reading.
“Your mother did not abandon you. She was forced to leave, and I made a promise that kept us apart.”
Emily stopped.
Her mother?
She had been told all her life that her mother died when she was a baby.
“Vicky,” Emily whispered. “You told me my mother was ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.”
Vicky’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From what? From my own mother?”
Daniel suddenly stood.
“That’s enough. The letter doesn’t tell you everything.”
Emily looked at him.
“Then what are you hiding?”
He reached into his coat and placed an old pH๏τograph on the table.
It showed a younger Daniel standing beside William Carter and a beautiful woman with dark hair.
On the back was a date—and a name.
ELEANOR.
Emily stared at the pH๏τograph.
“Is she my mother?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said something that made Emily’s world collapse.
“Yes. And she’s been living less than fifty miles from this ranch.”
Emily could barely breathe.
“Where is she?”
Daniel looked at Vicky before answering.
“She’s been searching for you for twenty-five years.”
A long silence filled the room.
Then Vicky spoke in a trembling voice.
“Emily, there’s something else you need to know. Your father didn’t just hide your mother’s idenтιтy. He also hid the truth about who paid to keep you separated.”
Emily turned toward her.
“Who?”
Vicky looked at Daniel.
And Daniel slowly reached for the old notebook.
“Your father wasn’t the only person who made those payments.”
At that moment, a folded paper slipped from the back of the pH๏τograph.
Emily picked it up.
It was a birth record.
But the father’s name had been crossed out and replaced with another man’s name.
A name she recognized immediately.
Thomas Blake.
The man who had once asked her to marry him.
