PART 2 — THE BILLIONAIRE WHO BEGGED HIS WIFE TO COME BACK

Alexander Moretti had never run through a H๏τel lobby in his life.

He had never chased anyone.

People chased him.

Investors waited outside his office for meetings. Politicians returned his calls within minutes. Executives rearranged their schedules whenever he demanded their presence.

But that night, he was the one running.

“Find the parking records! Check every exit! Get me the security footage from the street!”

His voice thundered through the lobby.

His head of security, Marcus, approached with a phone in his hand.

“Sir, we’ve located her vehicle.”

Alexander spun around.

“Where?”

“Three blocks from here. It was parked outside a pharmacy. But she’s no longer there.”

“Then find her!”

Marcus hesitated.

“Sir, there’s something else.”

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“The woman left the H๏τel alone. She wasn’t carrying much. Just her purse.”

Alexander looked down at the crumpled ultrasound in his hand.

Our baby.

His baby.

For five years, he had imagined becoming a father someday. He had imagined teaching his child to ride a bicycle, taking family vacations, and watching a little version of himself run through the gardens of his estate.

And tonight, he had slapped the woman carrying that child.

His knees nearly gave way.

“Marcus…”

“Yes, sir?”

“Call the hospital. Find out if the ultrasound report has any additional information.”

Marcus nodded and stepped away.

Alexander looked at the image again.

There were two tiny lines of information beneath the scan.

Gestational age: 9 weeks, 3 days.

Estimated due date: June 2.

He stared at the date.

Nine weeks.

Claire had known for at least some time.

She had carried this secret into their anniversary celebration, probably rehearsing the words she wanted to say when she gave him the pH๏τograph.

And he had humiliated her in front of hundreds of people.

He remembered the way she had looked at him after the slap.

She hadn’t screamed.

She hadn’t begged.

She had simply looked at him as though something inside her had finally died.

For the first time, Alexander understood that he might have lost something money could never replace.

Twenty-five minutes later, he was standing in the underground parking garage, speaking to his driver.

“Take me home.”

“Of course, Mr. Moretti.”

“No. Not the mansion.”

He looked at the ultrasound again.

“Take me to Claire’s apartment.”

The driver hesitated.

“Sir, Mrs. Moretti hasn’t been staying there recently.”

Alexander froze.

“What do you mean?”

The driver looked uncomfortable.

“I thought you knew. She moved some of her belongings out three weeks ago.”

Alexander slowly turned toward him.

“Who authorized that?”

“Nobody, sir. She arranged it herself.”

Three weeks.

The same period when Claire had apparently discovered she was pregnant.

He remembered that evening.

He had returned home after midnight and found several boxes near the staircase.

When he asked about them, Claire had smiled weakly.

“I’m just reorganizing some things.”

He hadn’t bothered to ask another question.

He had been on the phone with Vanessa.

Now the memory made his stomach twist.

“Drive.”

Meanwhile, I was sitting in the back of a taxi, watching Chicago disappear behind the rain-covered window.

My cheek still hurt.

But the pain in my chest was worse.

My phone had been vibrating continuously.

Alexander.

Alexander.

Alexander.

Then his mother.

Then Vanessa.

I finally answered the next call.

It was Margaret Moretti.

“Claire! What have you done?”

I closed my eyes.

“Good evening, Margaret.”

“Don’t use that tone with me. Alexander is beside himself. Do you have any idea what you’ve put him through?”

I almost laughed.

“What I’ve put him through?”

“You humiliated him in front of his business ᴀssociates. And now you’re refusing to answer his calls!”

I looked at my reflection in the window.

A red mark stretched across my cheek.

“Did Alexander tell you he slapped me?”

Silence.

Then Margaret sighed.

“You know how emotional he gets when Vanessa is involved.”

I felt something cold settle inside me.

“So that’s your explanation?”

“Claire, don’t turn this into something bigger than it is. Vanessa has been through a difficult time. She needed some comfort.”

“And I needed a husband.”

Margaret became quiet.

I continued.

“Tonight was our fifth anniversary. I planned that celebration for three months. I was carrying his child, and he struck me because I wouldn’t surrender my seat to another woman.”

“Lower your voice.”

“No, Margaret. For five years, I’ve lowered my voice. I’ve lowered my expectations. I’ve lowered myself to make everyone comfortable.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“But I’m finished.”

I ended the call.

Then I switched off my phone.

At the Moretti mansion, Alexander entered the house carrying the ultrasound.

The first person he encountered was Vanessa.

She was sitting on the living room sofa, wrapped in one of his mother’s cashmere blankets.

When she saw him, she immediately stood.

“Alexander! Thank goodness. I’ve been so worried.”

He didn’t respond.

She approached him.

“Your wife made a terrible scene tonight. I tried to calm her down, but she wouldn’t listen.”

Alexander slowly raised his eyes.

“Don’t.”

Vanessa stopped.

“Don’t what?”

“Don’t talk about Claire.”

Vanessa blinked.

“Alexander, I’m only trying to help.”

He looked at her white dress.

The dress she had deliberately worn to his anniversary celebration.

The dress that had made his wife uncomfortable.

Then he looked at the ultrasound in his hand.

“Did you know?”

Vanessa frowned.

“Know what?”

“That Claire was pregnant.”

Her expression changed.

For one brief second, something resembling panic crossed her face.

Then she recovered.

“Pregnant?”

Alexander stepped closer.

“Answer me.”

“I had no idea.”

He studied her.

Then his phone rang.

Marcus.

Alexander answered immediately.

“Speak.”

“Sir, we reviewed the H๏τel footage again. We also recovered something from the security office.”

“What?”

“A small envelope that fell from Mrs. Moretti’s purse near the ballroom entrance.”

Alexander’s heart began pounding.

“What’s inside?”

“A medical appointment card. There’s also a receipt from a private obstetric clinic.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“Send me the details.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Alexander, please. You shouldn’t be worrying about this right now. Claire made her choice when she walked out.”

He turned toward her.

“My wife didn’t walk out because she wanted to hurt me.”

His voice was frighteningly quiet.

“She walked out because I hurt her.”

Vanessa reached for his arm.

He stepped away.

“Alexander, we’ve known each other our entire lives.”

“I know.”

“Surely five years of marriage can’t erase everything between us.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he said something she clearly hadn’t expected.

“Five years of marriage should have meant more to me than a childhood friendship.”

Vanessa’s face went pale.

Before she could answer, Margaret entered the room.

“Alexander, you need to calm down. Claire will come back once she realizes how unreasonable she’s being.”

He looked at his mother.

“No.”

Margaret frowned.

“What?”

“She’s not coming back because we tell her to.”

He held up the ultrasound.

“She is carrying my child. And I put my hands on her.”

His voice broke on the final words.

For the first time, Margaret had no answer.

At 1:17 a.m., Alexander finally received a message from an unfamiliar number.

It contained a pH๏τograph.

Claire, sitting in a hospital examination room.

His heart stopped.

He immediately called the number.

A woman answered.

“Hello?”

“This is Alexander Moretti. Where is my wife?”

There was a pause.

“Mr. Moretti, this is Dr. Evelyn Carter from Lakeside Women’s Medical Center.”

Alexander gripped the phone.

“Is Claire all right?”

“Your wife came in for an examination tonight. She’s understandably distressed.”

“Is the baby okay?”

Another pause.

“Mr. Moretti, I can’t discuss your wife’s private medical information without her consent.”

“I understand. Please, just tell her I’m coming.”

“Mr. Moretti…”

“Yes?”

“Before you do anything, I suggest you listen to what your wife wants.”

The call ended.

Alexander stood motionless.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Get the car.”

I was sitting on the edge of an examination bed when Dr. Carter returned.

She placed a glᴀss of water beside me.

“Your blood pressure is elevated, but we’re monitoring you. The initial examination hasn’t identified an immediate emergency. We’ll need to continue your prenatal follow-up.”

I nodded.

“Thank you, doctor.”

She studied my face.

“Do you have somewhere safe to stay tonight?”

I looked down at my hands.

“Yes.”

“Are you certain?”

I hesitated.

Then I nodded again.

Dr. Carter gently touched my shoulder.

“Whatever happens with your marriage, you deserve to be treated with respect. And you don’t have to make any decisions tonight.”

I swallowed.

“I know.”

But I didn’t.

Not really.

Because part of me was still remembering the man who had held my hand at our wedding.

The man who had promised never to hurt me.

The man who had kissed my forehead when I was sick and told me I would never have to face anything alone.

How could that same man have struck me in front of hundreds of people?

A knock sounded at the door.

The nurse opened it slightly.

“Mrs. Moretti, there’s someone here asking to see you.”

My heart sank.

“Who?”

The nurse hesitated.

“Your husband.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Alexander had finally found me.

“Tell him I don’t want to see him.”

The nurse nodded and stepped outside.

But seconds later, I heard his voice in the hallway.

“Claire! Please!”

I gripped the edge of the bed.

“Please, just let me speak to her!”

“Sir, you need to lower your voice.”

“I know! I’m sorry. Just tell her I’m here.”

I heard footsteps approaching.

Then a familiar voice spoke through the partially opened door.

“Claire, I found the ultrasound.”

I didn’t move.

“I found it in the trash. I know about the baby.”

My eyes filled with tears.

He continued.

“I know I’m the last person you want to see. I know I don’t deserve to ask you for anything.”

His voice cracked.

“But please, let me know you’re okay.”

I stared at the floor.

Then I heard him say something that made my blood run cold.

“Claire, I need to tell you something about Vanessa.”

I slowly raised my head.

“What about her?”

There was a long silence.

Then Alexander answered.

“She wasn’t invited to our anniversary celebration by accident.”

I froze.

“What?”

“My mother arranged for her to attend. But that’s not the worst part.”

He took a shaky breath.

“Three weeks ago, Vanessa came to my office and told me she was pregnant.”

My fingers went numb.

I stared at the door.

“Alexander…”

“She said the baby was mine.”

The room seemed to disappear around me.

I couldn’t speak.

He continued, his voice barely audible.

“I believed her. I never told you because I didn’t know how to explain it.”

I slowly climbed down from the examination bed.

“Did you have a test?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Another silence.

Then he said:

“The results came back this afternoon.”

I gripped the bed rail.

“What did they say?”

Alexander’s voice broke.

“Claire, the baby isn’t mine.”

I stood completely still.

For five years, Vanessa had been the shadow in our marriage.

And now I was beginning to understand that the anniversary humiliation had been more than a cruel coincidence.

But before I could ask another question, Alexander said the one thing that made me realize the betrayal went much deeper.

“There’s something else. My mother knew about the test results before the party.”

I looked toward the door.

“Then why did you let her sit in my chair?”

His answer came after several seconds.

“Because she told me Vanessa was going to announce something that night. And I thought…”

He stopped.

“You thought what?”

“I thought if I gave her what she wanted, she would finally leave us alone.”

I stared at the man standing outside my room.

The man who had sacrificed his wife’s dignity to keep another woman happy.

And for the first time, I understood that the problem had never been Vanessa alone.

It was Alexander.

It was Margaret.

And it was five years of a marriage in which everyone else’s feelings had always come before mine.

I walked toward the door.

But I didn’t open it.

Instead, I spoke through the narrow gap.

“Alexander, I want you to listen very carefully.”

He went silent.

“You didn’t just lose your wife tonight.”

I placed my hand over my stomach.

“You lost the privilege of being the first person I wanted to share this child with.”

On the other side of the door, I heard him break down.

And then my phone vibrated.

A message from Marcus appeared on the screen.

Mrs. Moretti, there’s one more thing you need to know. I found the original security footage from Mr. Moretti’s office three weeks ago. It shows exactly what Vanessa and Mrs. Moretti discussed before the anniversary party.

I stared at the message.

Then another one arrived.

I think you should see it before you decide whether to trust anything Mr. Moretti tells you.

I looked at the closed door.

Alexander was still waiting outside.

And suddenly, I wasn’t sure whether the truth about Vanessa’s pregnancy was the biggest secret I was about to uncover.

Because the footage suggested that someone had planned to destroy my marriage long before that anniversary night.
