More than 19 years after three-year-old Madeleine McCann vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal, the case remains one of the most closely followed missing-child investigations in the world. Recent developments have included a multi-day search operation in 2025 and the release of the main suspect from a German prison later that year, followed by continued monitoring and information-sharing between authorities into 2026.

Madeleine disappeared on the evening of May 3, 2007, from the family’s rented apartment at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, in Portugal’s Algarve region. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were having dinner with friends a short distance away when they discovered she was missing. The disappearance triggered an immediate and extensive international response, with Portuguese, British, and later German investigators involved at different stages. Despite numerous inquiries, appeals, and searches over the years, no conclusive resolution has been reached.

In 2020, German prosecutors publicly identified Christian Brueckner, a German national with a lengthy criminal record, as the primary suspect. They cited circumstantial evidence, including mobile phone data that placed a device registered to him in the vicinity of the resort on the night Madeleine went missing. Brueckner, who had lived and worked in the Algarve for several years around that period, has consistently denied any involvement. He has never been formally charged in connection with the McCann case.

In early June 2025, Portuguese and German authorities launched a fresh search across multiple plots of land in the Lagos area, roughly a few miles from Praia da Luz. The operation focused on terrain near a cottage previously ᴀssociated with Brueckner and included examination of undergrowth, an abandoned building, wells, and ditches. Approximately two dozen German investigators took part, supported by Portuguese police, and used equipment capable of scanning below the surface. The search, requested by German prosecutors, lasted several days but did not produce publicly announced breakthroughs.

Brueckner completed a seven-year prison sentence in Germany in September 2025 for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz. Upon his release from Sehnde prison, he was fitted with an electronic ankle monitor to allow authorities to track his movements. Police confirmed he left the facility under escort but did not disclose his destination. Conditions attached to his release included restrictions such as reporting requirements and limitations on travel.

The release drew attention to differences in legal standards. German prosecutors have indicated that the available material has not met the threshold required under German law to bring charges related to Madeleine’s disappearance, which applies stricter criteria regarding purely circumstantial evidence compared with some other jurisdictions. British investigators from the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Grange had sought to interview him prior to his release, but he declined.

Into 2026, the investigation has continued. Reports indicated that British detectives received additional files concerning Brueckner from German authorities. Operation Grange remains active, with ongoing cooperation between UK, German, and Portuguese officials. Brueckner has been subject to continued supervision; in early 2026 he was relocated to a different town and placed in local authority accommodation. He continues to deny any link to the disappearance.

Kate and Gerry McCann have repeatedly affirmed their determination to uncover the truth. On the 18th anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance in May 2025, they stated that their commitment to examining every possible avenue remained unchanged, even as the years continued to pᴀss.

As of mid-September 2026, more than 19 years after Madeleine was last seen, the case is still classified as an active investigation.
