Nearly two decades after Madeleine McCann disappeared in Portugal, British investigators are examining a new dossier reportedly containing important information linked to Christian Brückner, the German man long regarded by German authorities as the central suspect in the case.

According to reports published in July 2026, German authorities pᴀssed new material to officers working with Operation Grange, the Metropolitan Police investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance. The dossier has been described as “crucial,” although authorities have not publicly confirmed that it contains evidence proving Brückner was responsible for what happened to Madeleine.

Madeleine was three years old when she disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007. Despite years of searches and investigations involving British, Portuguese and German authorities, her whereabouts have never been established.

Brückner became a major focus of the investigation after German prosecutors publicly identified him as a suspect. He was living in the Algarve around the time Madeleine vanished and had connections to the Praia da Luz area. He has consistently denied involvement in her disappearance and has never been charged in connection with the Madeleine McCann case.

The latest dossier could give British detectives an opportunity to reᴀssess information already gathered during the long-running investigation. Reports have suggested that the material includes evidence previously examined by German investigators, but the exact contents have not been fully disclosed publicly.

Operation Grange has remained active since 2011 and continues to work with authorities in Portugal and Germany. The Metropolitan Police has said investigators will continue to pursue viable lines of inquiry.

The development comes after Brückner was released from a German prison in September 2025 after completing a sentence for an unrelated offence in Portugal. His release renewed attention on the Madeleine investigation, particularly because British detectives have continued efforts to examine evidence surrounding him.

For now, however, the new dossier does not mean the case has been solved. Madeleine has never been found, Brückner has not been charged over her disappearance, and investigators have not publicly announced evidence that establishes what happened to the missing child.

Nearly 20 years after Madeleine vanished, the case remains open — and the latest exchange of information between German and British investigators could provide another opportunity to examine one of the most closely watched missing-person investigations in Europe.
