Michiel Vandeweert’s Remarkable Life: The Progeria Survivor Who Turned His Story Into a Message of Hope

Michiel Vandeweert was born with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, an exceptionally rare genetic condition that causes accelerated aging. Doctors initially believed he might live only to around 12, yet Michiel defied those expectations and lived until the age of 28, becoming one of the oldest known people with the condition.

His story became even more extraordinary because his younger sister, Amber, was also diagnosed with progeria. Having two siblings with the condition is exceptionally rare, and their lives were later documented in the 2026 documentary How To Be Alive: Amber and Michiel.

Rather than allowing his diagnosis to define him, Michiel built a life around the things he loved. He worked as a DJ, created gaming content and developed a large online following across platforms including YouTube, Instagram and Twitch. His openness, humor and positive outlook turned his personal journey into a source of encouragement for thousands of people.

Michiel was also a pᴀssionate supporter of Belgian football club KRC Genk. After his pᴀssing on August 10, 2026, the club paid tribute to him, and his final wish was fulfilled when his farewell ceremony was held inside the Cegeka Arena. The occasion reflected the remarkable connection he had built with his community and the people who followed his journey.

Michiel’s life may have been shaped by a rare condition, but it was ultimately remembered for something much bigger: the way he chose to live it. His story continues to inspire people far beyond Belgium, leaving behind a powerful reminder to make the most of the time we are given.
