New Jersey Mother and Stepfather Charged After Maya Thomas 9-Year-Old Girl Dies From Severe Injuries

A heartbreaking case in Paulsboro, New Jersey, has prompted an investigation into the death of 9-year-old Maya Thomas, whose mother and stepfather are facing murder charges after authorities determined that her injuries were not consistent with the vehicle accident they initially described. The case has raised serious questions about what happened inside the family’s home before the child was taken to the hospital.

According to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, India Miller, 27, and Sean D. Scott, 45, contacted emergency services at approximately 1:10 a.m. on October 13, 2026, reporting that the girl was not breathing. Scott allegedly told investigators that Maya had been walking a dog and might have been struck by a vehicle. Miller reportedly said she had heard a sound resembling tires screeching before Scott found the child near a shed outside their home.

However, investigators soon encountered evidence that contradicted the account. Medical personnel who examined Maya found extensive bruising, facial injuries and other trauma that officials said was inconsistent with a vehicle collision. Surveillance footage from nearby public buildings also showed no vehicle traffic in the area during the reported timeframe, according to prosecutors.

Maya was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ later that day at approximately 6:42 p.m. An autopsy determined that she died from multiple blunt-force injuries. The examination also revealed injuries in different stages of healing, which prosecutors said suggested that the child may have experienced prolonged physical abuse.

Investigators subsequently searched the family’s home and reported finding children’s clothing with suspected blood in an upstairs bathroom bathtub, along with suspected blood on nearby tiles and cleaning supplies. These findings became part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Maya’s death.

According to prosecutors, the child’s 4-year-old sibling also told investigators that Scott had struck Maya in the face and eyes. Authorities have cited that account, the medical findings and other evidence as part of the case against the couple. The allegations have not yet been established through a criminal trial.

Miller and Scott were charged with first-degree murder, first-degree accomplice to murder, two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, making a ficтιтious report to police and hindering prosecution. Both were being held at Salem County Jail following their arrests. If convicted, they could face life imprisonment. Scott also faces additional allegations reported by local media, including charges arising from his interaction with law enforcement.

The tragedy has deeply affected the Paulsboro community. Local officials expressed their condolences, while residents gathered on October 16 for a candlelight vigil honoring Maya. Community members brought candles, balloons and stuffed animals to pay tribute to the young girl and offer support to those mourning her loss.

The case has also renewed concerns about the protection of vulnerable children and the importance of recognizing signs of abuse. Although the investigation has produced significant evidence, the criminal proceedings will determine the responsibility of the accused. Both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

As investigators and prosecutors continue working through the case, Maya’s death remains a devastating loss for the community. The coming legal proceedings are expected to address the allegations against her mother and stepfather and examine the evidence surrounding the final hours of the child’s life.
