“Last тιтan” – The Final Giant Dinosaur of Earth Confirmed by Fossils!

Paleontologists have officially named Ultimoтιтan patagonicus—the “Last тιтan”—a colossal sauropod whose fossils prove giant dinosaurs survived until the very brink of the Chicxulub asteroid impact 66 million years ago.

Discovered in 2024–2025 in the uppermost layers of Argentina’s Allen Formation (dated to 66.3–66.1 million years ago), the partial skeleton includes a 2.1-meter femur, mᴀssive vertebrae, and osteoderms indicating an animal at least 30 meters long and over 60 tonnes. This places Ultimoтιтan among the very last non-avian dinosaurs on Earth, surviving only a few hundred thousand years before the mᴀss extinction.

Led by Dr. Leonardo Salgado and an international team, the study published in Science (June 2026) used high-precision dating and stratigraphic analysis to confirm the specimen’s position just below the K-Pg boundary. Bone histology shows the animal was a healthy adult, not a stressed juvenile, proving тιтanosaurs maintained their extreme size until the final moments of the Cretaceous.

“This is the smoking gun,” Salgado stated. “Giant sauropods did not gradually decline—they were thriving right up to the asteroid’s arrival.” The find also reveals a unique pelvic structure suggesting Ultimoтιтan could still support its enormous bulk on relatively soft floodplains, challenging earlier models of late-Cretaceous dinosaur decline.
