Born Fighting: Kiah’s Extraordinary Journey of Strength and Survival

Kiah spent his first days fighting for his life.

Before he was even born, doctors warned his parents, Ilona and Ryan, that their son would face serious medical challenges. During a routine pregnancy scan at just 12 weeks, they learned that Kiah had gastroschisis, a rare birth defect in which a baby is born with a hole in the abdominal wall, causing the intestines to develop outside the body.

From the moment they received the news, Ilona and Ryan knew their son’s arrival would be different.

Doctors explained that Kiah would require immediate medical intervention after birth and would likely spend time in intensive care. Yet no one could predict just how many obstacles he would face during the first months of his life.

When Kiah was born, he was rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where a team of specialists began working to save him.

His battle started immediately.

At just one day old, Kiah underwent his first operation.

It would not be his last.

Four Surgeries in His First Week of Life

Most newborns spend their first week sleeping in their parents’ arms.

Kiah spent his first week in an operating room.

Within seven days of being born, he underwent four major surgeries. Surgeons worked tirelessly to carefully place his bowels back inside his tiny body and repair the damage caused by his condition.

The procedures were invasive and exhausting for such a small baby.

Kiah required a nasogastric feeding tube through his nose, intravenous lines, cannulas in his hands and feet, and a central line to provide essential fluids and medication.

Every day became a fight.

Every small improvement felt like a victory.

But the toughest challenges were still ahead.

A Sudden Setback and a Dangerous Infection

After several surgeries, doctors believed Kiah was finally beginning to make progress.

His parents dared to hope.

However, even the smallest amount of milk proved too much for his fragile digestive system.

Soon, Kiah experienced a severe drop in oxygen levels, known as a desaturation event. Doctors quickly discovered the cause: sepsis, a life-threatening infection that can rapidly overwhelm the body.

For any infant, sepsis is dangerous.

For a baby already recovering from multiple surgeries, it was terrifying.

Kiah was immediately placed on powerful antibiotics and closely monitored around the clock.

Against the odds, he survived.

Yet his journey remained far from over.

Another Surgery, Another Battle

Just when Ilona and Ryan believed the worst had pᴀssed, doctors informed them that Kiah would need another major operation.

This time, surgeons performed a complex seven-hour procedure to place a stoma bag, allowing his digestive system additional time to heal.

The surgery itself was difficult.

What followed was even harder.

After the operation, Kiah’s body went into shock. He struggled to breathe, and doctors fought to stabilize him.

As he recovered, pressure inside his abdomen caused his surgical wound to reopen, creating another serious infection and another setback in his already fragile recovery.

For his parents, the emotional toll was immense.

Yet Kiah continued doing what he had done since birth.

He kept fighting.

Three Months of Courage and Determination

Day after day, week after week, Kiah proved stronger than anyone expected.

After three long months in hospital, his abdominal wounds finally began to heal. Doctors shifted their focus toward helping him tolerate milk feeds and reducing his dependence on intravenous nutrition.

His progress was slow but remarkable.

Ilona and Ryan even completed specialized Parenteral Nutrition (PN) training so they could safely care for Kiah’s central line at home if necessary.

But once again, their little warrior surprised everyone.

Kiah began tolerating more milk feeds and showed signs that he might soon no longer require nutritional support through his central line.

Each milestone represented another victory in a battle that had lasted since the day he was born.

A Home Away From Home

While Kiah fought in hospital, his parents faced a challenge of their own.

Their family home was located nearly 120 miles away in Craven Arms, Shropshire. Traveling back and forth every day was financially and emotionally impossible.

Just three days after Kiah’s birth, a NICU nurse introduced them to Ronald McDonald House Birmingham.

The accommodation changed everything.

Instead of spending hours on the road, Ilona and Ryan could remain just minutes away from their son.

If an emergency happened, they could be by his side almost immediately.

More importantly, they were able to stay together as a family.

They could wake Kiah in the morning, spend time with him throughout the day, and be there at bedtime.

Those seemingly simple moments became priceless.

Strength Through Community

Beyond providing a place to stay, Ronald McDonald House gave the family something equally valuable: support.

The staff created an environment filled with compᴀssion, understanding, and kindness. Over time, Ilona and Ryan formed friendships with other parents facing similar challenges, finding comfort in shared experiences.

The House became more than accommodation.

It became a community.

A place where families facing unimaginable circumstances could find hope.

Looking Toward the Future

After more than nine months in hospital, Kiah continues to grow stronger every day.

The tiny baby who endured countless surgeries, life-threatening infections, and overwhelming medical complications is now moving closer to the moment his parents have dreamed about for months: going home.

His journey has been far from easy.

But Kiah’s story is a powerful reminder that even the smallest fighters can possess extraordinary strength.
