Indiana Father Sentenced to 92 Years After Guilty Plea in Death of Infant Son and ᴀssault on Child’s Mother

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — An Indiana man has been sentenced to 92 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of his three-month-old son and the attempted murder of the child’s mother in a case that deeply affected the Tippecanoe County community.

According to court records, 29-year-old Eliasard Moneus received a sentence of 62 years for murder and 30 years for attempted murder, with the terms to be served consecutively. The sentence followed his guilty plea in connection with the death of his infant son, Jacob, and the violent ᴀssault of his wife, Edlie.

Prosecutors said the events unfolded on August 10, 2024, when Lafayette police responded to a hospital after Edlie reported that she had been attacked inside the family’s home. Investigators documented evidence of a violent ᴀssault, including injuries that authorities said were consistent with being struck with a tire iron.

Jacob was missing when officers first responded, prompting an intensive search.

According to investigators, Moneus was located the following day. During the investigation, officers discovered Jacob deceased inside the residence. An autopsy later determined that the infant died from asphyxiation after being immersed in laundry detergent, according to court documents.

During sentencing, Tippecanoe Superior Court Judge Steve Meyer described the crime as among the most disturbing he had encountered during his judicial career. Prosecutors argued that the offense was deliberate and emphasized the devastating impact on Jacob’s family.

The court also heard evidence regarding the severe injuries sustained by Jacob’s mother during the ᴀssault. She survived the attack and later provided information that ᴀssisted investigators during the case.
