HAWAII’S MOST BELOVED MONK SEAL HAS DIED… AND THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY IS DEVASTATED
With heavy hearts, Hawaiʻi officials confirmed the tragic loss of RH32, better known as Kaʻale — a famous Hawaiian monk seal loved by locals, rescuers, and animal lovers across the islands.

For years, Kaʻale was a familiar sight along the Waiʻanae coast, where volunteers and marine rescue teams spent countless hours protecting and monitoring him. But like many endangered monk seals, his life was filled with dangerous encounters caused by humans — including painful hook injuries and life-threatening entanglements.
On May 6, emergency crews launched a major recovery effort after reports of a deceased seal near Nānākuli. HMAR worked alongside Honolulu Ocean Safety, DLNR, NOAA Fisheries, and federal law enforcement agencies to safely recover and transport Kaʻale for examination.

Officials say the exact cause of death remains UNKNOWN. Marine experts explain that detailed post-mortem examinations and diagnostic testing can take weeks, and they are urging the public not to spread rumors or misinformation online.
Kaʻale wasn’t just another seal — he became a symbol of Hawaiʻi’s fragile marine life and touched thousands of hearts around the world
