The arrest footage that spread from Del Rio is as unsettling to many viewers as the crime itself, because it does not look like the aftermath of a fatal stabbing. Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, is seen barefoot and smiling as officers walk her to a patrol car in a тιԍнт black romper whose print shows hands cupping her breasts, an outfit police say replaced the pink top and jeans she wore in surveillance of the attack. Her younger sister, Amaya “Cookie” Diaz, 19, smiles and smirks on camera and is reported to have told a bystander to stop recording.

Their friend Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, was arrested soon after. Del Rio police say the three were identified through surveillance video from Faz’s residence, physical evidence, and witness interviews after officers were called at about 2:10 p.m. on June 25, 2026, to Val Verde Regional Medical Center, where a woman had arrived with multiple stab wounds. Detectives traced the ᴀssault to the 800 block of East 10th Street, near a busy corridor that friends of the victim said was close to a Sonic and one of the city’s most traveled roads. Caroline “Caro” Peña, 32, a mother of five, was flown to a San Antonio hospital and pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ around 9 p.m.

Once her death was confirmed, the charges became murder. On Friday the three appeared before Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Jesse James Trevino, requested court-appointed lawyers, and were each held on $5 million bond. Criminal complaints describe Peña arriving first in a black Dodge pickup, then the sisters arriving in a black Chrysler 300. Amaya is described getting out with an object believed to be a knife and striking Peña in the back until blood showed on her shirt; Kitty then began physically ᴀssaulting her and Faz joined in before the group broke apart. Police noted that by the time they interviewed the Diaz sisters the original clothing was gone and the women’s hair was wet from recent showers.

Friends of Peña have said a pH๏τograph taken after the violence, later removed from Facebook, showed her bloodied shirt and the other women still on the scene, a picture Zelina Ochoa called powerful because it seemed to show three people who arrived with weapons facing a woman who had only her hands. Christina Salinas, a friend of eight years, said Peña had called her around 1:35 p.m. and that the missed call now haunts her because she believes she might have been there if she had answered. A nephew got Peña to the local hospital while she was still breathing; Salinas later said she kissed her friend before the airlift. Police Chief Frank Ramirez has indicated the killing was not random and that the accused knew the victim. Peña’s uncle described Del Rio as a place where everyone has a connection and said he had known a Diaz relative for thirty years. No official motive has been released. Loved ones opened a GoFundMe for the five children. The three suspects remain at the GEO Correctional Facility as the investigation continues.
