Jamie Varley sat motionless in the dock of Preston Crown Court as the judge pronounced a whole-life order that will keep him behind bars until the day he dies, the carefully constructed image of a loving adoptive father finally stripped away in front of a silent gallery. Dressed in faded jeans and a dark polo shirt rather than the smart suits he had worn throughout the trial, the 37-year-old former head of year at South Shore Academy in Blackpool showed not the slightest reaction while the full horror of what he had done to 13-month-old Preston Davey was laid bare once more.

Beside him his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, received a 25-year sentence for his role in the sustained physical and Sєxual abuse that ended the child’s life.
