Former FBI Agent Claims Investigators May Be Closing In on Key Person in Nancy Guthrie Disappearance

Tucson, Arizona — A former FBI agent has suggested that investigators may be making significant progress in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, though law enforcement has not confirmed the claims.
During an appearance on “The Megyn Kelly Show”, former FBI agent Maureen O’Connell said she believes authorities are “getting close” to identifying or apprehending the individual seen on surveillance footage outside Nancy Guthrie’s home on the night she disappeared.
O’Connell told listeners she was “75 percent” confident investigators were making substantial progress involving the person commonly referred to as the “porch guy.”

“I think they’re getting close,” O’Connell said, adding that once the individual is taken into custody, “the floodgates shall swing open.”
Host Megyn Kelly responded by saying the development would be significant if confirmed.
O’Connell did not disclose the source of her information or provide additional evidence to support her ᴀssessment. She also did not explain why she believes investigators are nearing an arrest, stating only:
“Things are happening.”
She suggested that investigators may be taking additional time to ensure any future prosecution can withstand legal challenges.
“You’re going to have the greatest defense attorney in the world handling this case,” O’Connell said. “So you have to operate under the ᴀssumption that a couple big chunks of your evidence may get tossed.”
Law enforcement agencies have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects in connection with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
Nancy disappeared from her Tucson-area home during the early morning hours of February 1, 2026.
Ten days later, the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department released doorbell camera footage showing a masked individual standing outside her home. The video appeared to show the person tampering with the home’s doorbell camera before the disappearance.
The idenтιтy of the individual shown in the footage has not been publicly confirmed, and investigators have not stated whether the person has been identified.
In March, Savannah Guthrie spoke publicly about watching the surveillance footage for the first time, describing the experience as deeply traumatic.
“I can’t imagine that is who she saw standing over her bed. I can’t,” Savannah said during an interview with colleague Hoda Kotb.
She added that thoughts about what her mother may have experienced continue to weigh heavily on her.
Despite months without answers, Savannah has continued making emotional public appeals for information that could help investigators locate her mother.
Most recently, she told viewers of NBC’s Today that her family remains in “agony” and urged anyone with information to come forward.
“We cannot be at peace… Please do the right thing,” she said.
Savannah also declined to comment on recent reports regarding ransom communications connected to the investigation, explaining that she is not involved in NBC’s news coverage of her mother’s case.
As of July 3, 2026, Nancy Guthrie remains missing. Authorities have not confirmed that an arrest is imminent, and O’Connell’s comments remain her personal ᴀssessment rather than an official update from investigators. The FBI and local law enforcement continue to ask the public to report any credible information that could ᴀssist the ongoing investigation.
