Authorities said many of the children had experienced abuse, neglect, exploitation or exposure to other criminal activity.

The 163 children were not all part of one single case. Officials described a range of circumstances involving missing children, meaning the viral suggestion that all 163 had been found together or were victims of the same crime is misleading.

Another detail has also caused confusion online. Social-media posts have circulated footage suggesting dramatic scenes from the operation, but fact-checkers found that several of the clips were actually taken from older, unrelated incidents and reused to illustrate the Florida story.

Three arrests had been announced in connection with individual cases at the time of the operation’s public announcement, but there is no evidence that those three people were responsible for all 163 disappearances.

The real story is still significant: 163 children were located through a coordinated effort, and authorities said recovered children needing ᴀssistance were connected with medical providers, child-welfare professionals, social services and other support.

So while the number 163 is real, some of the most dramatic versions spreading online leave out crucial context.
