Defense Begins Case in Lindsay Clancy Trial as Former Mother-in-Law Describes Months of Struggle

The defense opened its case in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial by calling her former mother-in-law to the stand, where she described a woman who had been openly struggling and repeatedly seeking help in the months before the deaths of her three children. Susan Clancy, the mother of Lindsay’s then-husband Patrick, told jurors that the family was deeply worried about Lindsay’s deteriorating mental state and that she had been “begging for help.”
Susan Clancy, herself a labor and delivery nurse like Lindsay, said the two women had maintained a close relationship. She characterized Lindsay as a caring and affectionate mother. Jurors were shown text messages exchanged between them in which Lindsay expressed growing anxiety about her dependence on certain medications and her fear of taking them at night. In one message from late November 2022, Lindsay wrote that she was “not okay” and was terrified about taking her pills that evening.

The testimony came one day after Lindsay’s own mother, Paula Musgrove, and her sister told the court about the changes they observed beginning in the fall of 2022. They described Lindsay becoming increasingly anxious, paranoid, and fearful of being alone. Lindsay told them the medications she was taking were “destroying her mind.” In December she disclosed thoughts of harming the children, and she later told her sister she had experienced daily suicidal thoughts for about a month.
Lindsay Clancy does not contest that she caused the deaths of her three children—Cora, age 5; Dawson, age 3; and Callan, then approximately 8 months old—on January 24, 2023, inside the family’s home in Duxbury, Mᴀssachusetts. After the children were killed, she injured herself and jumped from a second-story window, resulting in paralysis. The central question for the jury is her mental state at the time of the events. Her attorney argues she should be found not criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a rare and severe condition ᴀssociated with the hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, and stress that can follow childbirth. The defense further maintains that she had bipolar disorder and that antidepressants prescribed after the birth of her youngest child intensified her symptoms. According to her lawyer, on the day of the killings she heard a voice telling her this was her last opportunity to kill the children so she could end her own life.

Prosecutors argue that the actions were deliberate. They have presented evidence that Lindsay arranged for her husband to leave the house that evening—sending him to pick up takeout food and visit a pharmacy—and that she engaged in ordinary daily activities earlier, including taking the children to a medical appointment and playing with them outdoors. They have also questioned the extent of her suicide attempt.
A forensic psychiatrist who reviewed Lindsay’s medical records testified that her symptoms aligned with postpartum anxiety beginning in September 2022, around the time she was preparing to return to work after Callan’s birth. The records documented a worsening of her condition over the following months as she consulted multiple providers and received a series of prescriptions. The psychiatrist noted that the records later referenced hearing a voice, but acknowledged under cross-examination that she had not reported hearing voices prior to the children’s deaths.

The defense has portrayed Lindsay’s psychiatric care as fragmented, with different clinicians prescribing medications without consistent coordination. Treating providers who testified earlier said they observed suicidal thinking but did not see clear signs of mania or psychosis. If the jury convicts Lindsay Clancy of murder, she faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. If the jury finds she lacked criminal responsibility, she would be committed to a state psychiatric facility.
The trial, now in its fourth week in Plymouth Superior Court, continues with the defense presenting evidence focused on Lindsay Clancy’s mental health history and the treatment she received in the months leading up to the tragedy.
