China Announces Major Offshore Oil Find as 110-Million-Ton Discovery Fuels Energy Ambitions

China has announced a major offshore oil discovery that could strengthen its long-term energy security and reduce pressure from imported crude.

The discovery, known as the Huizhou 19-6 oilfield, is located in the eastern South China Sea, about 170 km from Shenzhen, and is reported to hold more than 100 million tons of proven oil reserves. Some reports describe the total estimate as around 110 million tons, making it one of China’s most important recent offshore energy breakthroughs.

🛢️ Early test drilling reportedly produced 413 barrels of crude oil and 68,000 cubic meters of natural gas per day, showing strong development potential. The field is also significant because it lies in deep and ultra-deep geological layers, where high pressure and high temperature make exploration more difficult.

For Beijing, this discovery is more than just an oil story. It is part of a wider push to boost domestic energy production, secure supply chains, and reduce reliance on overseas oil at a time of rising global uncertainty.

🌊 The big question now: how fast can China turn this offshore discovery into large-scale production — and what could it mean for the future balance of energy power in Asia?
