Brazilian authorities have formally charged three rope-jump instructors following the death of 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, who fell approximately 40 meters (131 feet) from the abandoned Ponte do Esqueleto during a guided rope-jumping event.

Investigators allege that Maria was launched from the bridge without being connected to the required safety rope. Video footage and witness statements reportedly show the rope remaining on the platform as she was sent over the edge. One witness can allegedly be heard shouting, “The rope! The rope!” moments after realizing something had gone terribly wrong.

The three instructors—identified by Brazilian media as Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra—have been charged with a homicide offense based on alleged reckless disregard for a fatal risk. Authorities say the men admitted Maria was not attached to the safety system but claimed they could not remember who was responsible for the final equipment check.

Police investigator Andrea Dantas Levy has also alleged that the operation lacked proper authorization and oversight, raising serious concerns about safety procedures at the event. Officials believe the tragedy may have resulted from a complete breakdown in verification protocols before the jump.

The case has triggered nationwide outrage in Brazil, with calls for stronger regulation of extreme-sports activities. In the aftermath of the incident, local authorities have even discussed demolishing the abandoned bridge to prevent future tragedies.
