Indira de Rooij has spent her entire life overcoming challenges that most people could never imagine.

Born with a rare condition called lymphatic malformation, Indira developed fluid-filled cysts across her face, tongue, chin, and throat. Just hours after she was born, doctors realized the cysts were blocking nearly 70% of her airway, forcing them to perform an emergency tracheotomy to save her life.

During her first months, Indira underwent numerous surgeries and even survived two cardiac arrests while fighting to stay alive. Over the years, she had more than 30 operations to reduce the malformations before doctors decided the risk of facial paralysis was too great to continue.

The physical challenges were only part of her journey.

As she grew older, strangers stared, laughed, and secretly took pH๏τos of her. At just 16 years old, a picture of Indira went viral on social media after someone cruelly compared her to a movie monster. The post received more than 10,000 likes, leaving her devastated.

“It was really tough on my mental health,” she recalled.

With the help of therapy, time, and unwavering determination, Indira slowly learned to embrace herself despite the hurtful comments.

Today, at 25, she works as a nurse in the Netherlands—a career that many once believed would be impossible for her.

Although she still lives with a tracheotomy and cannot swim, her condition is now stable, and she is exploring safer treatment options rather than undergoing more high-risk surgeries.

Most importantly, Indira says she has never felt happier.

“I have never been happier than I am this year,” she shared.

Now, she hopes her story encourages others with visible differences to believe in themselves, no matter what others say.

“If you have big dreams and you have a disability, it doesn’t mean you can’t achieve them,” she said. “No one thought I would become a nurse or build the life I have today.”

Her journey is a powerful reminder that true strength isn’t defined by appearance—it’s found in resilience, courage, and refusing to let cruelty determine your future.
