At 34 weeks pregnant, Amy Cawley knew something was wrong. For three days, she hadn’t felt her baby girl move. What should have been a time of joyful anticipation quickly turned into a race against time. Doctors at Poole Hospital in Dorset discovered the baby’s heart rate was dangerously low, forcing an emergency C-section. On December 9, Darcie-May Ferris entered the world weighing just 4lb 7oz.
From the very first moment, her parents, Amy and Alex Ferris, knew their daughter’s journey would be unlike any other. Both of Darcie’s arms were discolored with dark, birthmark-like patches. She was immediately taken to intensive care and later transferred to Southampton General Hospital. An MRI revealed the heartbreaking truth: Darcie had suffered a stroke while still in the womb, caused by a blood clot that had traveled from her shoulder and cut off blood supply to her developing limbs.
The damage was devastating. Over the following months, Darcie underwent six complex operations to remove severely damaged tissue from her hands and arms. One of the most shocking and emotional moments for her parents came during bath time, when some of her fingers simply came away. The reality of what their tiny daughter had endured hit them with overwhelming force.
“We expected it, but it was still very hard to go through,” Alex shared. Doctors had warned Amy that if they had waited another 48 hours, they might have lost Darcie entirely. The fear of losing their baby girl was terrifyingly real.
Despite the immense challenges, Darcie proved to be a fighter. After six weeks in hospital, she was finally able to go home. Today, she has her thumb and index finger remaining on her left hand, while her right arm has been surgically shortened at the forearm. She will require ongoing treatment and future reconstructive procedures, but her bright spirit continues to shine through.
“Darcie has been through so much, and we feel lucky every day that she’s here,” Alex said. “She will grow up without her arms and hands, but we will help her feel confident and proud of who she is.”
Amy and Alex are now focused on physiotherapy and raising funds to secure the best possible prosthetics and care for Darcie as she grows. They want their daughter to live as normal a life as possible — full of opportunities, confidence, and joy.
At just a few months old, Darcie is already showing a beautiful smile and a growing personality that lights up every room. Her parents are determined that her physical differences will never define her. Instead, they want her story to be one of resilience, love, and endless possibility.
Darcie-May’s journey began with a silent blood clot that changed her life forever before she even took her first breath. But what the clot could not touch is her unbreakable spirit and the deep love surrounding her. Her parents refuse to let this tragedy limit her future. With every smile, every milestone, and every day forward, Darcie is proving that true strength isn’t about what you have — it’s about the courage to keep shining despite what you’ve lost.
This tiny warrior with a heart full of light is already teaching her family — and everyone who hears her story — that hope can bloom even after the darkest moments. Darcie’s story is far from over, and her brightest chapters are still being written.
