BEHIND THE FACADE OF JAMIE VARLEY: HOW A TEACHER’S PUBLIC IMAGE COLLAPSED AFTER PRESTON DAVEY’S CASE

Jamie Varley had presented himself as a teacher and a man who wanted to become a father. But the evidence heard during the eight-week trial revealed a deeply disturbing reality behind that public image.

Preston Davey was placed with Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley in March 2023. Lancashire Police said the 13-month-old had been healthy and happy while with his foster carers, but suffered repeated abuse during the four months he spent with the adoptive couple. More than 40 injuries were documented.

When Preston was taken to hospital on July 27, 2023, Varley claimed that the baby had accidentally drowned in a bath. Prosecutors presented medical evidence that contradicted that explanation, and the jury ultimately convicted Varley of murder and multiple other offences.

On June 18, 2026, Varley received a whole-life order, meaning he will never be eligible for parole. McGowan-Fazakerley was sentenced to 25 years for his role in the offences and Preston’s death.

The case has also raised wider questions about safeguarding. Preston had been seen by multiple professionals, and the court heard that he had previously been taken to hospital with injuries. An independent safeguarding review has now resumed to examine how agencies involved in his care responded before his death.

For Preston’s family, the convictions brought accountability — but no sentence can undo the loss of a child.
