For nearly a year, little Nellie Rosales had never truly heard her father’s voice.

Born with microtia and atresia, rare conditions that left her deaf in one ear, the 11-month-old from North Carolina recently received a specialized hearing device designed to bypᴀss her undeveloped ear canal using gentle vibrations through her skull.

The moment the device was activated, Nellie heard her dad, Jacob Rosales, speak for the very first time.

Overwhelmed by the unfamiliar sound, she immediately burst into tears—a touching reaction that left her parents emotional.

“It brought sunshine to my heart, even if she was overwhelmed,” Jacob said.

As the days pᴀssed, Nellie quickly adjusted to her new world. Now she eagerly wears her hearing device, turns toward sounds she had never noticed before, and can even hear the family dogs barking from another room.

Her parents, both serving in the military, say the transformation has been remarkable. Thanks to their health insurance, they were able to afford the $6,000 device that has changed their daughter’s life.
