When Luna Fenner was born, she had a rare skin condition called congenital melanocytic nevus, which covered much of her face with a large dark birthmark often nicknamed a “Batman mask.”

Determined to find the best possible treatment for her daughter, Luna’s mother, Carol Fenner, traveled from the United States to Russia after learning about an innovative procedure that offered hope without the extensive surgeries recommended elsewhere.

Under the care of surgeon Dr. Pavel Popov, Luna underwent pH๏τodynamic therapy, a treatment designed to gradually remove the abnormal pigmented tissue while minimizing pain and scarring.

Just weeks into treatment, doctors removed the bandages covering Luna’s forehead and revealed an incredible transformation. The dark birthmark on that part of her face had disappeared, leaving healthy pink skin that doctors expect will continue healing over time.

Carol said seeing the results confirmed she had made the right decision.

“I knew I had to try,” she said. “Seeing the birthmark gone for the first time was amazing.”

Unlike more invasive surgical options, Luna’s recovery was smooth. According to her mother, she experienced little discomfort, required no pain medication, and healed faster than expected.

Although the treatment is not yet complete and will continue over many more months, doctors are optimistic that Luna’s skin will continue to improve while reducing future health risks ᴀssociated with her condition.

Today, Carol says she feels hopeful for the future and grateful that her daughter has the opportunity to grow up with a healthier outlook after a journey that took them halfway around the world.
