PART 2 — THE FORGED BLOODLINE… AND THE RECKONING IN THE HIGH MINE! 😱⚡
The yellowed birth certificate slipped from Nathaniel’s fingers, fluttering onto the worn wooden stairs.
His eyes locked onto the black ink—his full legal signature, meticulously copied down to the very loop of the ‘C’.
“I was never in Wichita seven years ago, Evelyn!” Nathaniel’s voice cracked with raw intensity. “Seven years ago, I was in Texas burying my brother. I never laid eyes on you until yesterday morning in that filthy barn!”
“Then who signed the territorial custody order?!” Evelyn cried, leaning heavily against the banister as agonizing pain sH๏τ up her fractured legs. “Who took my newborn daughter from my arms the night my father was murdered?!”
Before Nathaniel could take another step up the flight, heavy boots stomped through the doctor’s clinic door downstairs.
BANG!
A slug shattered the grandfather clock on the landing, raining glᴀss and brᴀss cogs over the steps.
Richard Bennett strode into the clinic foyer, smelling of whiskey and gunpowder, flanked by four armed drifters in dusters. His eyes burned with venomous triumph as he aimed a smoking Colt directly up at the landing.
“Touching reunion, sweetheart!” Richard laughed cruelly. “You ran all the way to Carter’s bank, thinking the son of your father’s old partner would be your knight in shining armor!”
“Richard, step back!” the sheriff commanded from the clinic corner, his hand twitching near his holster.
“Shut your mouth, lawman!” Richard snarled, flashing a gold badge from beneath his coat. “Under territorial authority from the governor’s circuit, I am the court-appointed administrator of the Bennett silver estate. That woman is an escaped mental patient, and that drifter has five seconds to kick that wooden box down the stairs before I blow his chest open!”
Margaret Holloway stepped out from the shadows beside the clinic counter, her black mourning veil trembling with fury.
“You always were a greedy thief, Richard,” Margaret said, her voice piercing the tense room like an ice pick. “Tell him the truth! Tell Nathaniel whose name you stole to forge that certificate!”
Richard sneered, his finger тιԍнтening on the trigger. “The old woman knows too much. Kill them all and grab the girl!”
“OVER MY ᴅᴇᴀᴅ BODY!” Nathaniel roared.
In a split second, Nathaniel threw his heavy frame down the stairs, drawing his customized Schofield revolver with lightning mountain speed.
BANG! BANG!
Two gunsH๏τs deafened the narrow clinic. Nathaniel’s round took Richard’s lead gunman clean through the shoulder, throwing him backward through the clinic’s plate-glᴀss storefront. The second hireling panicked as splinters rained down, ducking behind the heavy medicine cabinets.
“Margaret! Take Evelyn through the rear apothecary door to the cellar!” Nathaniel bellowed, firing a suppressing round that drove Richard behind the oak counter.
Nathaniel scooped Evelyn into his arms off the landing, her tears wetting his neck as she clung to him despite the white-H๏τ agony in her limbs. He kicked through the heavy reinforced oak door into the doctor’s back storage room, barricading the iron latch just as a barrage of bucksH๏τ ripped through the wood panels.
Inside the dim stone cellar, Margaret struck a match, lighting a kerosene lantern sitting on an old wooden crate.
“We don’t have much time,” Margaret panted, her breath ragged. She grabbed Nathaniel’s arm with surprising strength. “Your late father didn’t die in a riding accident, Nathaniel. He was ambushed on Miller’s Pᴀss because he found Evelyn’s stolen child!”
Nathaniel turned, his chest heaving, his gun smoking in his hand. “Where is she, Margaret?! Who has Evelyn’s daughter?!”
“Richard didn’t act alone,” Margaret whispered, tears spilling down her weathered cheeks. “Seven years ago, Evelyn’s father willed the entire half-million-dollar mine directly to his first grandchild, bypᴀssing Richard completely. To steal the patent, Richard needed a living heiress under his absolute control—or a signature that couldn’t be challenged in territory court. He hired an identical twin… a man with your face, Nathaniel.”
Nathaniel froze as if struck by lightning. “My brother… Thomas? But Thomas was hanged in Texas!”
“Thomas didn’t hang!” Margaret wept. “Richard bought his pardon from the corrupt Texas circuit! Thomas signed those custody papers using your legal name and took the baby into the high peaks. The girl isn’t ᴅᴇᴀᴅ… she’s been locked inside the caretaker’s cabin at the mouth of the northern silver shaft for seven years!”
Evelyn gasped, clutching Nathaniel’s chest, her nails biting into his wool vest. “My baby… my little girl is alive?!”
Suddenly, the heavy cellar ceiling shook violently.
BOOM!
Plaster and dust rained down into the lanterns. The sound of heavy iron hinges being dragged across the floorboards above echoed through the stone chamber.
Then came the cold, mocking scrape of spurs on the cellar steps—from a hidden tunnel opening behind the storage racks.
A tall figure stepped out of the pitch-black corridor into the lantern light.
He was broad-shouldered, wearing a dark rancher’s duster, with a lever-action Winchester resting casually across his forearm.
When he tilted his wide-brimmed hat up, Nathaniel stumbled backward against the stone wall.
The man had Nathaniel’s jaw.
His dark, slate-gray eyes.
The identical jagged scar cutting through his left eyebrow.
The man smiled—a cruel, twisted grin that chilled the air to zero degrees—and reached behind his coat, pushing a terrified seven-year-old girl with Evelyn’s emerald-green eyes into the lantern circle.
The stranger cocked the rifle with a deafening CLACK and leveled the barrel right between Nathaniel’s eyes.
“Hello, little brother,” the man whispered with a venomous chuckle. “You always were too slow to claim what was ours… Now tell Evelyn the rest of the story, or her daughter watches you die first.”
