PART 2 — THE GHOST IN THE BLIZZARD… AND A SISTER’S ᴅᴇᴀᴅLY SHADOW! 😱❄️
Nathaniel’s knuckles turned white around the stock of his Winchester.
Outside the window, snow whipped against the glᴀss, but the lantern light illuminated every feature of the rider’s face. The high cheekbones, the slight cleft in the chin, the crooked scar through the left eyebrow—it was Cole Harrison. The brother Nathaniel had dug a grave for beside the river ten brutal winters ago.
“Cole died in the territory wars…” Nathaniel rasped, his voice trembling with an agonizing mix of disbelief and dread. “I buried him with my own hands. I placed our father’s silver medallion on his chest!”
“That’s not Cole!” Rebecca sobbed from the floor, desperately pulling Lucy and Noah behind her skirt. “Nathaniel, look closer! His eyes… they aren’t your brother’s!”
The heavy oak front door shuddered under three violent kicks.
“Open the damn door, brother!” the stranger’s voice roared through the timber cracks. “You always were too sentimental! You buried an outlaw who stole my uniform and my coat, while I was locked away in a Kansas stockade! Now unlock this latch before I burn this cabin to the ground with everyone in it!”
Nathaniel cocked the rifle with a deafening metallic clack. “Stay behind the iron stove, Rebecca! Don’t you move an inch!”
Nathaniel threw the heavy ᴅᴇᴀᴅbolt back and yanked the door open into the howling gale, leveling the rifle barrel straight at the man’s chest. “Step back into the yard, or you won’t need an empty grave this time.”
The man in the long black coat didn’t flinch. Instead, a mocking, triumphant grin spread across his frostbitten lips.
“Still playing the mountain saint, aren’t you, Nate?” the man laughed coldly. “You think you’re protecting a poor, innocent widow? Ask her what happened to her husband in Ohio! Ask her whose signature is on the railway bond for half a million dollars in gold certificates!”
Rebecca crawled toward the doorframe, tears freezing on her pale cheeks. “He forced my husband to sign those papers, Nathaniel! He held Noah over a well until my husband gave up his life’s work—and then he sH๏τ him in the back!”
“He was a weak fool who stood in the way of progress,” the stranger sneered, gesturing to the two armed outlaws flanking his horse. “Rebecca stole the duplicate certificates and ran. But she didn’t just run anywhere… she answered your mail-order bride advertisement because she knew this ranch sits directly on the railway’s only mountain pᴀss. She used your lonely heart to buy herself an armed bodyguard!”
Nathaniel felt a sharp sting in his chest, glancing down at Rebecca. Her face was buried in her hands, her silence admitting the bitter truth.
“Is that why you came, Rebecca?” Nathaniel asked, his voice cracking. “Just a shield?”
“I wanted to keep my babies alive!” she wept. “I had nowhere else to turn!”
“Touching,” the stranger laughed, his hand resting lazily on the ivory handle of his holstered Colt. “Now send the woman and the boy out with the satchel, Nate. You can keep the girl. We don’t need ᴅᴇᴀᴅ weight.”
“Over my ᴅᴇᴀᴅ body,” Nathaniel growled, тιԍнтening his finger on the trigger.
“I was hoping you’d say that,” a soft, chilling voice purred from the darkness just behind the corner of the porch.
A fourth horse slowly trotted into the circle of lantern light.
A woman sat side-saddle in a fine velvet riding coat, her face partially shaded by a black mourning veil. She reached up with leather-gloved fingers and lifted the netting away from her eyes.
Nathaniel’s breath caught in his throat. His knees nearly buckled beneath him.
The delicate tilt of her nose. The striking hazel eyes. The small beauty mark near the corner of her lips.
It was the woman from the portrait above the fireplace.
The woman whose grave Nathaniel had tended with fresh wildflowers every spring for four lonely years.
“E-Elizabeth…?” Nathaniel choked, lowering the rifle barrel in total paralysis. “You’re… you’re breathing…”
The woman smiled—not with the gentle warmth Nathaniel remembered, but with a cruel, calculating venom that turned his blood to ice water.
“I told you, Mama!” Noah cried out in sheer panic from behind the stove. “That’s the lady from Ohio! She’s the one who held the lantern while the bad man sH๏τ Papa!”
The woman chuckled, a low, melodic sound that cut through the shrieking blizzard.
“Oh, Nathaniel… you were always so wonderfully blind,” she purred, reaching into her coat to pull out a silver derringer, cocking the hammer with a flick of her thumb. “Elizabeth died four years ago, exactly like the doctor said. But my dear twin sister never told you she had a darker half, did she?”
She aimed the barrel right between Nathaniel’s eyes as the two gunmen stepped onto the porch behind him, their sH๏τguns leveled at his spine.
“Give Cole the certificates, brother-in-law,” she whispered with a sinister smirk. “Or the little boy dies first, right where his real mother can watch.”
