PART 3 — The Promise by the Well

PART 3 — THE NIGHT AT THE WELL
Clara waited until the house was quiet.
Samuel had gone to bed early. The lamps in the study were out. She changed out of her dress and into an old skirt and blouse she used to wear on the ranch. She left her wedding ring on the dresser.
Then she walked down the hill in the dark.
The well sat exactly where it always had. The rope was still there. The stones were cold under her hand.
Jesse was already waiting.
He stood on the far side, hat in his hands, the way he used to when he was nervous. The moonlight caught the scar on his cheek that hadn’t been there three years ago.
“You came,” he said.
“I almost didn’t.”
He nodded like he understood.
They stood with the well between them for a long moment. Neither of them moved closer.
“I tried to stay away,” Jesse said. “I told myself you were better off. That Samuel could give you things I never could.”
“He can,” Clara answered. “He already has.”
“Then why are you here?”
She looked at the water far below.
“Because I still hear your voice every time I close my eyes. And because I needed to know if you were still the man who made me that promise.”
Jesse took one step around the well.
“I’m not,” he said quietly. “I did things after I left. Things I can’t take back. The law isn’t looking for me because of a misunderstanding. They’re looking for me because I earned it.”

Clara didn’t step back.
“Are you still the man who put my hand on his heart and told me he’d come back?”
“I don’t know,” he said. “But I came.”
A branch cracked somewhere in the dark behind the barn.
Both of them turned.
Samuel stood at the edge of the trees, a rifle resting easy in his hands. He wasn’t aiming it. Not yet.
“I told you to decide,” he said. His voice was calm. Almost gentle. “Looks like you did.”
Jesse moved in front of Clara without thinking.
Samuel watched the movement and gave a small, tired smile.
“You don’t have to do that,” he said. “I’m not going to shoot her.”
He looked at Clara.
“But I am going to ask you one question. And I want the truth.”
The night was very still.
“If I let him walk away tonight,” Samuel said, “will you stay?”
Clara felt Jesse’s shoulder under her hand. She felt the cold stone of the well against her back. She felt the weight of the ranch, her father’s life, and the ring she had left on the dresser.
She opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, another voice spoke from the dark on the other side of the well.
“Nobody’s walking away.”
Three men stepped out of the shadows. Badges caught the moonlight. Rifles were already raised.
The sheriff looked at Jesse.
“Jesse Cole,” he said. “You’re under arrest.”
Then he looked at Samuel.
“And you might want to lower that gun, Mr. Graves. This just became official business.”
Jesse didn’t move.
Clara didn’t breathe.
And Samuel slowly lowered the rifle, his eyes never leaving his wife’s face.
