“WE WILL DO EVERYTHING WE CAN”: POLICE PAY TRIBUTE TO LUKE, JACKSON AND ZARA AS INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Northumbria Police have expressed their condolences following the tragic d#aths of three teenagers, Luke Etheridge, Jackson Duke and Zara Shaw, as investigators continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident in Sunderland.
Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie, area commander for Sunderland, said the families were facing “unimaginable agony and heartbreak.” He pledged that officers would do everything possible to support them and acknowledged the profound impact the tragedy has had on the local community and beyond.

The three teenagers were travelling in a black Audi A3 when it left Panns Bank and entered the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge shortly before 1:30 p.m. on September 29, 2026. Jackson was 17, while Luke and Zara were both 16.
Their families and communities have begun sharing tributes that reflect the young people they were. Zara’s family remembered her infectious smile, laughter and love for her sister. Luke’s family described him as kind, caring and funny, and recalled his pᴀssion for Sunderland football. Jackson was remembered as a much-loved member of his football club.
Police have confirmed that a 17-year-old boy who was also in the car reached safety and sustained non-serious injuries. He was arrested on suspicion of causing d#ath by dangerous driving and has since been released on bail while inquiries continue. Investigators are still working to establish who was driving when the vehicle entered the river. Police have said they do not believe another vehicle was involved.
Authorities have urged the public not to speculate about the incident or share unverified claims online, stressing the potential impact on the families. Anyone with relevant information or CCTV or dashcam footage is being asked to contact Northumbria Police.
As the investigation continues, Luke, Jackson and Zara’s loved ones are left grieving three young lives and waiting for answers about what happened that afternoon.
