The Reason ITV Gave Sir Tom Jones in Private Is Not the Reason It Gave the Public

Sir Tom Jones says he did not ask to leave The Voice UK, and the gap between the reason he says he was given and the reason the public was given is now the whole story. On 8 September 2026 the 86-year-old singer from Treforest posted that ITV had made the decision, that it had been made a while ago, and that he had been told only recently. The reason given to him, he wrote, was a financial difficulty with insurance. What then appeared in the press was a refresh: a new coaching line-up, and no chair left for him. He said he loves the show, appreciates the audience, and did not want to go. ITV confirmed he will not be a full-time coach on series 15, thanked him for nine years, and said talks about some other involvement were continuing.

It did not, in the statements carried by the BBC, Hollywood Reporter, Variety, People and Rolling Stone, publicly adopt the insurance explanation as its own. That silence is what turned a routine panel change into a dispute about which version is the real one. Jones also said he had been offered a much-reduced role, an appearance rather than a coach involved from the start, and that he was not thrilled. The line that closed the post is the one that travelled: there is never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who is still pretty good at his job. He used the word fired. The show used the language of a loved colleague stepping back from a full-time chair. Those are not the same account. Insurance, if that is what was said to him, is a production and risk question: the cost of covering an older star on a long shoot, the limits of a policy, the point at which a budget decides a legend is easier to thank than to insure.

A refresh is a creative question: new faces, younger coaches, a line-up that can be sold as a restart. One explanation blames a spreadsheet. The other blames the show’s need to look new. Jones’s point is that he heard the first and then watched the second become the public story. He is still on the current series, series 14, beside will.i.am, Kelly Rowland, and McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones. Series 15, due in 2027, is the one that loses him as a full-time coach. An insider quoted via the Press ᴀssociation said ITV loves working with him and was hopeful about a return in some form, which sits awkwardly next to a decision he says was taken a while ago. The cameo offer is the bridge between the two versions.

A refresh can still find him a walk-on. An insurance problem can still allow a short appearance that does not carry a full-series risk. Neither version gives him the chair. For a singer who has been on the British show on and off since its BBC launch in 2012, the chair is the job. A greeting at the start is not the job. That is why the private reason and the public reason cannot be smoothed into one polite sentence, and why the post still reads as a correction of the official line rather than a farewell.
