CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LOCKED DOOR

CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LOCKED DOOR
Julian stood at the bottom of the staircase, staring at the forbidden door.
The house was silent again.
Too silent.
He looked at his phone.
The message was still there.
OPEN THE DOOR.
His father had kept that room locked for fifteen years.
No servants were allowed near it.
No family member had ever been given a key.
And yet someone was breathing behind it.
Julian climbed the stairs.
Each step echoed through the enormous foyer.
When he reached the door, he noticed something that made his stomach тιԍнтen.
The lock was already open.
He slowly placed his hand on the brᴀss handle.
Then he heard a woman’s voice from inside.
“Julian?”
He froze.
Nobody had called his name like that in years.
He pushed the door open.
The room was dark.
Heavy curtains blocked the sunlight.
Dust covered the furniture.
Old pH๏τographs lined the walls.
And sitting beside the window was a woman in a faded gray dress.
Julian stared at her.
He didn’t recognize her.
But she knew him.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he whispered.
The woman smiled sadly.
“I’ve been waiting for you.”
“Who are you?”
She reached toward the table beside her.
There was an old pH๏τograph lying beneath a layer of dust.
She handed it to him.
Julian looked down.
His father stood in the center of the pH๏τograph.
But he wasn’t alone.
A young woman stood beside him.
And in her arms was a newborn baby.
Julian’s hands began to shake.
“That can’t be…”
The woman looked at him.
“Your father told you that your mother died when you were born.”
Julian’s breathing stopped.
“He lied.”
The woman pointed at the baby in the pH๏τograph.
“That baby wasn’t you.”
Julian stared at her.
“What?”
She reached for another pH๏τograph.
This one showed two newborn babies lying side by side.
Twins.
Julian felt the room spin.
“No.”
“One of them was taken away.”
His voice became barely audible.
“Who?”
The woman looked directly into his eyes.
“Your brother.”
Julian stepped backward.
His entire life had been built around the belief that he was Richard Vance’s only son.
The heir.
The successor.
The child who had survived his mother’s death.
But now an old woman was telling him that everything he knew about his family was a lie.
“Where is he?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your father spent fifteen years making sure nobody could find him.”
Julian’s phone suddenly rang.
The number was unknown.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man’s voice came through.
Deep.
Cold.
Familiar in a way Julian couldn’t explain.
“You finally opened the door.”
Julian’s blood ran cold.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then the voice answered:
“The brother you were never supposed to know existed.”
The call ended.
Julian stared at the phone.
Behind him, the woman began to cry.
“Your father knows you’ve found the truth.”
Julian turned.
“What happens now?”
She looked toward the window.
Outside, three black SUVs had just entered the estate grounds.
“They’re here.”
Julian moved toward the window.
His heart began pounding again.
The vehicles stopped beneath the crystal chandelier’s reflection.
Men in black suits stepped out.
And then the rear door of the middle SUV opened.
A man emerged.
He looked almost exactly like Julian.
Same eyes.
Same jawline.
Same unmistakable Vance features.
But there was something colder in his expression.
He looked up at the mansion.
Then directly toward the window.
And Julian realized—
the secret his father had buried for fifteen years had just come home.
