🚨 LUCY LETBY CASE ENTERS A NEW CHAPTER — CONVICTIONS REMAIN, BUT FRESH MEDICAL EVIDENCE IS NOW UNDER REVIEW

The Lucy Letby case has entered another significant stage after a major public inquiry into the Countess of Chester Hospital was published, while new medical evidence submitted by Letby’s legal team continues to be examined by the Criminal Cases Review Commission.

Letby remains behind bars serving 15 whole-life orders after being convicted of the mu#der of seven babies and the attempted mu#der of seven others. Her previous attempts to challenge the convictions were unsuccessful.

However, the legal battle is not necessarily over.

⚖️ CCRC IS STILL REVIEWING THE CASE

The most important development for Letby herself is the continuing review by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).

The commission confirmed in February 2026 that its review of Letby’s convictions was underway. It stressed that its role is not to decide whether she is innocent or guilty, but to determine whether new evidence or arguments could justify referring the case back to the Court of Appeal.

Letby’s legal team has submitted substantial new expert material. An international panel of medical specialists has challenged aspects of the medical evidence presented during the original trials and has argued that some of the babies’ collapses or d#aths may have alternative medical explanations.

Those claims are being considered as part of the legal process. They have not, however, overturned Letby’s convictions.

🧬 NEW EXPERT OPINIONS ADD TO THE DEBATE

The international panel, ᴀssembled by Canadian neonatologist Dr Shoo Lee, involved 14 experts from six countries.

The experts have questioned some of the prosecution’s interpretations surrounding air embolism and other medical evidence. Their conclusions have been presented as part of the material supporting Letby’s application for further review.

At the same time, the new arguments remain contested. ITV reported that two experts who had previously been involved with Letby’s defence team withdrew in September 2026, raising concerns about some of the arguments being advanced by the defence. They continued to support their own report concerning two insulin-related convictions but said other arguments presented by the legal team had scientific problems they could not support.

That means the current situation is considerably more complicated than social-media claims suggesting that “new evidence has already proved Letby innocent.”

🏥 THE THIRLWALL INQUIRY HAS NOW REPORTED

Another major development came on September 15, 2026, when the long-awaited Thirlwall Inquiry report was officially published.

The inquiry examined what happened at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2018, including how concerns about babies and concerns surrounding Letby were handled by doctors, nurses, managers and other organisations.

The report highlighted serious failures in leadership, communication and safeguarding, including delays in responding to concerns raised by doctors.

However, the inquiry was not an appeal hearing and did not have the power to cancel Letby’s convictions.

The distinction is important: the report examines how the hospital responded to the events and what lessons should be learned, while the CCRC is separately considering whether Letby’s convictions should be referred back to the courts.

🚔 THE INVESTIGATION INTO HOSPITAL LEADERS IS STILL OPEN

There is also a separate criminal investigation involving senior figures connected with the hospital.

Cheshire Constabulary confirmed that three former members of the hospital’s senior leadership team were arrested in June 2025 on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. All three were subsequently released on bail and remain on bail while enquiries continue.

Police also confirmed that a separate arrest was made in April 2026 in connection with an investigation into suspected perverting the course of justice. That individual also remains on bail.

Cheshire Police said both the corporate manslaughter and gross negligence manslaughter investigations are continuing, with no fixed timetable for completion.

🔎 SO, HAS LUCY LETBY’S CONVICTION BEEN OVERTURNED?

No.

As of September 24, 2026, Letby remains convicted and continues to serve her whole-life sentences.

But the wider case is still generating major legal and medical debate because the CCRC is examining new material that could, if it meets the required threshold, potentially lead to a referral to the Court of Appeal.

That outcome has not happened yet.

The Thirlwall Inquiry has also produced a separate record of serious insтιтutional failures at the hospital, while the criminal investigation into former senior leaders remains active.

📌 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The next major question is whether the CCRC will consider the new evidence sufficient to refer any of Letby’s convictions back to the Court of Appeal.

Until that happens, the existing convictions remain legally in force.

So despite dramatic claims circulating online that the “entire case has collapsed,” the current picture is more nuanced: the convictions remain, the CCRC review continues, new medical arguments are being examined, and separate investigations into hospital leadership are still ongoing.

For now, the Lucy Letby case is not legally finished — but neither has her conviction been overturned.
