HEARTBREAKING: UKRAINIAN REFUGEE IRYNA ZARUTSKA, 23, DI@ES AFTER ATTACK ON CHARLOTTE LIGHT RAIL
A Young Woman Seeking Safety in America
Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian woman who had fled her homeland following Russia’s invasion, lost her life after an attack aboard Charlotte’s LYNX Blue Line on August 22, 2025.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, officers responded to an emergency call shortly before 10 p.m. after reports of an ᴀssault aboard the light-rail system. Zarutska was found inside the train and was pronounced d#ead at the scene.
Her d#ath has drawn widespread attention because Zarutska had come to the United States seeking safety after leaving Ukraine.
Suspect Taken Into Custody
Police identified Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr., then 34, as the suspect in the case. CMPD said he was taken into custody and charged with first-degree mu#der under state law.
Federal prosecutors later brought a separate case against Brown. On September 9, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a federal criminal complaint alleging that he committed an act causing d#ath on a mᴀss transportation system.
A federal grand jury subsequently indicted Brown in October 2025. The federal indictment includes a special finding that could allow prosecutors to seek the d#ath penalty, although the Justice Department had not announced whether it would actually pursue that penalty in the case.
The charges are allegations, and Brown is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Iryna’s Story
Beyond the criminal case, Zarutska has been remembered as a young woman who was building a new life after leaving Ukraine.
Her story has resonated with people in both the United States and Ukraine, particularly because she had sought refuge from war and was attempting to establish herself in Charlotte.
Her family has described the loss as devastating and said their focus remains on seeking justice for Iryna.
Investigation Moves Forward
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the train as part of the case. Federal prosecutors said the footage and other evidence formed part of the basis for the federal charges against Brown.
The FBI investigated the case with ᴀssistance from CMPD, while the state first-degree mu#der case continued separately from the federal prosecution.
For Iryna’s loved ones, however, the legal proceedings cannot change the central reality: a 23-year-old woman who had crossed an ocean looking for safety never got the chance to build the future she had hoped for.
Her story remains a reminder of the lives behind the headlines — and of the Ukrainian families who have had to rebuild their lives far from home.
