Christian Brueckner breaks his silence
A major new development has emerged in the long-running Madeleine McCann investigation after Christian Brueckner, the man German authorities have identified as the prime suspect, publicly revealed where he says he was on the night the three-year-old disappeared.
Brueckner has claimed that he was approximately 150 yards from the Praia da Luz resort where Madeleine was staying with her family on May 3, 2007.
This is the first time he has publicly discussed his movements that night, according to reports. He continues to deny any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance and says he has nothing to do with the case.

In an interview reported by the Mail on Sunday and covered by several British outlets, Brueckner said he had been near the beach in Praia da Luz that evening.
He claimed he was attempting to leave the area as police activity intensified following reports that Madeleine was missing.
According to his account, he encountered police checkpoints while trying to get out of the town.
His admission places him remarkably close to the holiday complex at the very time authorities were beginning the urgent search for the missing three-year-old.
He still denies involvement
Despite acknowledging that he was nearby, Brueckner insists that he had no connection to Madeleine’s disappearance.
He has previously denied being responsible for what happened to the child, and his latest comments maintain that position.
German prosecutors named Brueckner as their prime suspect in 2020, but he has never been charged in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance. Authorities have said they believe they have evidence linking him to the case, while acknowledging that it has not been sufficient to bring charges.
Why the admission matters
Madeleine disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, when she was just three years old.
Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were dining with friends at a nearby restaurant when Madeleine was discovered missing.
Brueckner was living in the Praia da Luz area at the time. His phone was also previously reported as having been active near the McCanns’ accommodation that evening, a detail that has formed part of the investigation surrounding him.
His new account does not establish what happened to Madeleine, but it adds another publicly acknowledged detail about his whereabouts on the night that has remained central to the investigation.
The case remains unresolved
Nearly two decades after Madeleine vanished, the case remains open.
British, German and Portuguese authorities have continued investigating different aspects of her disappearance. The Metropolitan Police investigation remains officially a missing-person investigation, while British detectives have reportedly been gathering evidence concerning a possible abduction case.
Madeleine has never been found, and no one has been charged in connection with her disappearance.
For the McCann family, the search for answers continues.
Brueckner’s latest admission may draw renewed attention to the events of that night, but it does not by itself prove his involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.
