‼️ HE WAS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD WHEN SOMETHING ON HIS FACE CAUGHT A SCHOOL EMPLOYEE’S ATTENTION. WHAT FOLLOWED WAS A CHILD ABUSE INVESTIGATION AND THE ARREST OF TWO ADULTS. 💔

A 5-year-old Connecticut boy arrived at school with tiny red spots covering parts of his face.

The marks, known as facial petechiae, immediately raised concerns about his wellbeing.

On June 1, detectives with the Enfield Police Department accompanied personnel from the Connecticut Department of Children and Families to Enfield Street School after DCF received a report involving the child.

What began with a school employee noticing something unusual eventually led investigators to allegations that the boy had been restrained so forcefully that he could not breathe.

Authorities arrested two Enfield residents, 40-year-old Matthew Wezniak and 33-year-old Jessica Abelin, on Sept. 8.

According to Enfield police, investigators allege that Wezniak restrained the child while compressing his body and blocking his airway.

Police also allege that Abelin knew the boy had been injured but failed to protect him during the incident or obtain medical ᴀssistance afterward.

Wezniak faces several serious charges, including second-degree strangulation or suffocation, first-degree unlawful restraint, first-degree reckless endangerment and risk of injury to a child.

His bond was set at $250,000.

Abelin was charged with risk of injury to a child, with her bond set at $150,000.

Both appeared in Hartford Superior Court on Sept. 8.

The case began months earlier, when someone at the boy’s school noticed something was wrong.

Facial petechiae can have different causes, but in this case, the visible marks prompted adults to take a closer look and report their concerns.

That decision became an important part of the investigation.

Authorities say there is no generalized threat to the public connected to the case.

Because the child is only 5 years old, his idenтιтy has not been publicly released.

The allegations against Wezniak and Abelin remain allegations. Both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

But the case highlights something important about children who may not be able to explain what happened to them.

Sometimes, the warning sign is small.

Sometimes, it is something as simple as an unusual mark on a child’s face.

And sometimes, the person who notices it can be the first step toward getting that child help.

💔 A 5-year-old walked into school. Someone paid attention. Someone reported what they saw. And investigators eventually uncovered allegations that he had been unable to breathe.
