In a strong appeal directed toward European leaders, Pope Leo XIV warned that the continent’s growing demographic crisis demands urgent social and economic support for families, young couples, and children.

Speaking at the Vatican during a gathering focused on social policy and family life, the Pope expressed concern over declining birth rates, aging populations, economic insecurity, and the increasing difficulty many young people face in building stable families. He said the crisis is not only demographic, but also cultural and spiritual.

“A society that stops welcoming life slowly loses hope for the future,” Pope Leo declared. He urged governments across Europe to adopt policies that make family life more sustainable, including affordable housing, secure employment, childcare ᴀssistance, and stronger protections for parents and children.

The Pontiff also criticized economic systems that prioritize productivity and consumerism while making family formation increasingly difficult. He emphasized that children should never be viewed as burdens, but as “a sign of hope and renewal for society.”

Pope Leo praised families who continue to raise children despite financial hardship and social uncertainty, describing them as “the foundation of every healthy civilization.” He concluded by calling on Europe to rediscover solidarity between generations and to place human dignity at the center of political and economic decision-making.
