Ukraine’s long-range drone campaign has struck another major blow deep inside Russia.

Reuters reported that Russia’s Perm oil refinery completely halted processing after a Ukrainian drone attack on May 7 caused a fire and damaged key equipment. The Lukoil-owned Permnefteorgsintez plant is one of Russia’s largest refineries and sits around 1,460 km east of Moscow, far beyond the usual front-line zone.

The shutdown comes as Ukraine intensifies attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure, targeting refineries, fuel depots, gas plants, and oil terminals. Reuters reported that multiple major Russian refineries have either stopped or reduced operations, putting pressure on fuel production and Moscow’s war economy.

For Kyiv, these strikes are designed to hit the fuel lifeline behind Russia’s military machine.
For Moscow, Perm’s shutdown is a warning that distance no longer guarantees safety.
One drone strike. One major refinery offline. And Russia’s energy backbone under growing pressure.
