Just 11 days remain until Tennessee’s currently scheduled September 30 execution of Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee’s death row.
The Tennessee Department of Correction has already selected seven official media witnesses and one alternate to cover the scheduled execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Insтιтution. The state says the execution is set for 10 a.m. CDT on September 30.
But the approaching date does not mean every legal avenue has ended.
Pike’s attorneys have filed a clemency peтιтion asking Gov. Bill Lee to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment. The peтιтion reportedly emphasizes her age at the time of the 1995 crime, her history of childhood abuse and trauma, and mental-health issues that her lawyers say were not fully considered when she was sentenced.
Pike was sentenced to d#ath for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. If the September 30 sentence is carried out as scheduled, Pike would become the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than two centuries.
Her attorneys have also pursued separate legal challenges involving Tennessee’s execution protocol, meaning additional court action could still affect the timeline.
For now, September 30 remains the scheduled date.
But with clemency and legal proceedings still in the picture, the final outcome has not yet been determined.
