💔 FOUR-MONTH-OLD BABY PLACED IN PROTECTIVE CUSTODY AFTER SERIOUS INJURY INVESTIGATION

A four-month-old baby girl from Jefferson City, Missouri, is in state protective custody after doctors discovered multiple injuries that raised serious concerns about how they occurred.

The infant was so young that she depended completely on the adults around her for food, comfort and protection. According to court documents, medical professionals discovered six fractured ribs, two fractures involving one of her legs, bruising and other injuries that investigators say were not consistent with ordinary childhood accidents.

Because of the seriousness of her condition, doctors transferred the baby to a specialized hospital for additional medical care.

The medical findings prompted authorities to investigate not only the infant’s injuries but also the circumstances inside the home.

Attention eventually turned toward the baby’s parents.

According to police and court documents, the child’s father, 23-year-old Noah Humphus, made statements that became central to the investigation. Authorities allege that Humphus admitted shaking his daughter on multiple occasions when she was crying or hungry.

Investigators reportedly believe Humphus told them he had shaken the baby at least 10 times.

Police also allege that Humphus demonstrated how he would grab the infant by her legs and acknowledged that the action could have contributed to one of the fractures identified by doctors.

The allegations have raised widespread concern because of the infant’s age and vulnerability. At four months old, she could not walk away from danger, explain what had happened or seek help for herself.

A baby’s crying is one of the most basic forms of communication during infancy. A child may cry because she is hungry, tired, uncomfortable or simply needs reᴀssurance. For a baby this young, the adults responsible for her care are also responsible for responding safely to those needs.

The investigation has also examined the role of the child’s mother, Wilo Zwolinski.

According to authorities, Zwolinski allegedly told investigators that she witnessed Humphus shaking the baby more than once. Investigators further allege that despite being aware of those incidents, she continued leaving the infant alone in his care.

Those claims remain allegations, and the legal process will determine what evidence supports them and whether further charges are appropriate.

Humphus has been charged with child abuse resulting in serious physical injury and remains in custody.

Public information available so far indicates that Zwolinski has not been criminally charged. Authorities have not announced whether additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

The case has also drawn attention to the importance of recognizing warning signs when a vulnerable child may be at risk.

For an infant, safety depends entirely on the adults around her. She cannot remove herself from a dangerous situation or explain what she needs. That dependence makes the circumstances surrounding her injuries especially troubling to those following the case. 💔
