A long and anxious search for a missing Springfield, Ohio, teenager ended on August 21, 2026, when the 16-year-old girl was found alive inside the home of her former high school science teacher. She had been missing for 263 days after leaving a youth facility in Columbus.

The girl was reported missing on December 2, 2025, after she ran away from Huckleberry House, a transitional living center in Columbus that provides support for at-risk and runaway youth. According to the missing-person report filed with Columbus police, she was last seen wearing a gray hoodie and black pants and was walking south. Her mother informed officers that the teenager was originally from Springfield and had little familiarity with the Columbus area. Local news outlets have withheld her name to protect her privacy.

For more than eight months, her family, police, and community members searched for answers. In Springfield, some neighbors became aware of online posts suggesting the girl might be staying at a particular house on West North Street. Danielle Flint, who lives two doors down from that address, said she saw Facebook posts raising the possibility and repeatedly tried to look for any sign of the teenager in the backyard or outside the property. She never spotted her.

On August 21, Springfield police officers and a member of a U.S. Marshals special task force went to the home of Jobe Binkley, 48. Court records show that law enforcement had already visited the residence on two earlier occasions and asked to search for the missing girl. On those previous visits, Binkley refused to allow officers inside and stated that the teenager was not there, even though records indicate he was aware she had been reported missing. On the third visit, he acknowledged that she was inside the house and called for her to come out. She emerged alive.

Binkley is a former science teacher with the Springfield City School District. Personnel records obtained through a public-records request show he was placed on administrative leave in November 2024 after the district received concerns about his professional interactions with students. Those allegations were later determined to be unsubstantiated. He was placed on leave again in January 2025 and was fired the following month for violating the district’s technology-use policies. The school district has stated it was not informed of any concerns involving this specific teenager until after Binkley was no longer employed there.

Binkley has been charged with one count of interference with custody, a misdemeanor. He entered a not-guilty plea and was released on bond. His next court date is scheduled for late September. A former prosecutor has noted that investigators will examine electronic devices and any statements the teenager provides about the period she spent at the residence. Depending on what is uncovered, additional charges could be considered as the case proceeds toward a grand jury.

The discovery has left neighbors reflecting on how the girl could remain so close to home for so long without being found. Flint described the emotional toll of the months-long uncertainty, saying she could not imagine the fear and worry the family endured while wondering whether the teenager was safe.
