How much Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer is actually getting paid – and who’s picking up the tab
LINDSAY Clancy’s high-profile defense attorney Kevin Reddington has sH๏τ to stardom as the divisive case grabs attention across the globe.
It’s left many wondering how much a lawyer like Reddington gets paid.
The lawyer has never actually confirmed an exact figure.
But Reddington has previously spoken about the huge financial burden of Clancy’s defense, telling The Boston Globe in 2023 that her parents, Paula and Mike Musgrove, had been footing the bill.
“They’re pretty much depleting everything they have to try and help her out,” he told the outlet, adding that “every nickel” spent on her defense had come from them.
Reddington’s normal private rate is not publicly known, although the veteran defense lawyer has previously valued his work on a major criminal trial at around $250,000.
His current financial arrangement with Clancy has not been disclosed.
In Mᴀssachusetts, where the court case is taking place, private counsel ᴀssigned to represent indigent defendants are paid around $140 an hour, according to The General Court of the Commonwealth of Mᴀssachusetts.
The U.S. Sun’s Katy Forrester spent nearly two weeks covering the final stages of the trial and observed that Reddington would often smile when the state rate of $140 per hour was mentioned to him by the media.
Despite questioning from a swarm of reporters outside the court, Reddington remained тιԍнт-lipped on whether he’s receiving the state rate or not.
Although it has not been publicly confirmed that Reddington is getting around $140 an hour, he has publicly stated that Clancy’s parents have drained their savings.
If Clancy’s family could no longer finance her defense and she qualified as indigent, Reddington could be compensated by the state at that rate.
The court previously stepped in to help with defense costs, approving up to $17,500 in public funds for two mental health experts after Reddington warned that the Musgroves’ resources were running out.
The U.S. Sun has reached out to Reddington for comment.
GoFundMe speculation
A GoFundMe page raising money for the Musgroves has drawn attention as some online sleuths claimed it was being used for legal fees.
Over $1.2million has been raised for Clancy’s parents so far and the goal has now been raised to $3million.
However, GoFundMe’s rules mean the Musgroves will not be able to use that money to pay Reddington.
A GoFundMe spokesperson told The U.S. Sun: “GoFundMe’s Terms of Service explicitly prohibit fundraisers that raise money for the legal defense of anyone formally charged with an alleged violent crime. ”
The organizer of that GoFundMe, Brandee Mulligan, had previously confirmed this fact to The Connecticut Post.
Mulligan said there are rules that limit the use of the money and it cannot be used to pay Clancy’s legal fees.
Mulligan’s GoFundMe page states: “The money belongs to Mike and Paula. The purpose of this fundraiser is to give them back some of the financial stability they have lost over the last three years and allow them to decide what they need as they eventually begin figuring out what life looks like after this trial.”
Interestingly, a fan of Reddington has set up a GoFundMe to raise money for him.
It’s only raised $155 of a $20,000 target so far.
The GoFundMe’s description states: “Melissa is organizing this fundraiser for Kevin J. Reddington, an attorney who has been doing pro bono work for Lindsey Clancy.
“Although Melissa does not know Kevin personally, she has been deeply moved by the phenomenal work, time, and heart he has poured into this case.”
One expert’s estimate
Shaun Yurtkuran is a criminal defense and personal injury attorney with more than two decades of experience in courtrooms.
He told The U.S. Sun: “The part I find interesting is that Reddington also went to the court and got public money approved to pay for defense experts.
“So, at least based on what we know publicly, this doesn’t look like a situation where Lindsay or her family had unlimited money and just wrote Reddington a giant check.”
Adding: “As far as what he’s actually getting paid, I have no idea. I don’t think anybody does other than Reddington and whoever is paying him. But I’ve handled murder cases most of my career, and this is about as complicated and time consuming as a criminal case gets.
“Three murders, an insanity defense, a ton of medical and psychiatric evidence, experts, years of preparation and now a trial that has gone on for weeks.”
Yurtkuran speculates that if Reddington wasn’t receiving a basic hourly rate to take the case, he could be earning hundreds of thousands of dollars.
He told us: “If you asked me what a private lawyer could charge for something like this, $250,000 to $500,000 would not surprise me at all. Frankly, it could be more.”
The legal expert suspects 75-year-old Reddington has taken the case because he’s interested in it, regardless of the financial compensation.
He explained: “At this stage of his career, it could be as simple as him genuinely being interested in the case and being willing to take it for less than what the actual value of his time would otherwise be.”
A previous paycheck
Court documents from a previous federal corruption case provided insight into Reddington’s typical compensation.
He was brought onto former Fall River, Mᴀssachusetts mayor Jasiel Correia’s legal team in 2018.
Correia was accused of ripping off investors in his SnoOwl app.
Reddington ultimately took the fight all the way to trial, defending Correia through an intense 18-day federal courtroom battle in 2021.
Text messages later filed in court showed Reddington telling Correia that taking the dramatically expanded case through trial would “normally be $250K.”
