💔 Angela Martinez was facing two life-changing journeys at once: becoming a mother and battling breast cancer.

The Central Texas mother was pregnant with her daughter, Isabela, while undergoing chemotherapy and doing everything possible to keep her baby safely inside her.

Then came a premature delivery.

Against the odds, Angela and her newborn daughter both made it through.

But giving birth did not mean the end of Angela’s cancer battle. Nearly a month later, she is still receiving chemotherapy while preparing for a double mastectomy and radiation.

Angela described the pregnancy and delivery as an emotional roller coaster. After Isabela was born, the newborn was taken to the NICU to manage her blood sugar while Angela tried to process everything her own body had endured.

“I still find it hard to believe I was pregnant, with breast cancer, doing chemo and both of us made it,” Angela wrote.

For this mother, those words capture just how extraordinary the past several months have been.

Now, there is still a long road ahead.

Angela says she has six more chemotherapy treatments remaining. Once those are completed, she expects to undergo a double mastectomy, followed by radiation. She anticipates needing another six to eight weeks away from work after surgery.

And while she is fighting cancer, recovering from childbirth and caring for a newborn, Angela is also facing a difficult reality familiar to many families dealing with serious illness: keeping her health insurance.

Angela has been trying to balance cancer treatment with work because she needs to maintain the insurance that helps cover the medical care she desperately needs.

Think about what that means.

She has gone through pregnancy while battling cancer. She has endured chemotherapy, a premature delivery and the stress of having her newborn daughter cared for in the NICU.

And she still has to think about when she can return to work so she does not lose the coverage helping her fight the disease.

At home in New Braunfels, Texas, her husband has been helping hold their family together while Angela focuses on treatment and recovery.

For now, she is trying to take the journey one step at a time.

“We’re making it through chemo,” Angela wrote. “We made it through pregnancy and delivery… now we rest and prepare for surgery and radiation.”

Those words carry both exhaustion and hope.

Angela has already fought through one of the most difficult chapters imaginable. Now she is preparing for the next.

And pray for Angela herself — that she is given enough time, support and strength to heal without having to choose between fighting cancer and keeping the insurance she needs to continue that fight.
