One week after 1-year-old Weston was pulled from a submerged vehicle, his family is holding onto a hope they once feared might disappear.

Weston was in the vehicle with his mother, Carissa, when her family believes she suffered a seizure. The vehicle eventually ended up in a pond, leaving both mother and child in danger.

A first responder was able to pull Carissa from the water. Rescuers then discovered that her baby was still trapped inside.

Weston had reportedly been underwater for an estimated 11 minutes.

First responders immediately began CPR. They continued for approximately 52 minutes before successfully getting his pulse back.

What followed was a week of uncertainty, fear, and countless prayers.

Then came news his family desperately needed.

Weston’s neurology team told them that their little boy is going to survive. While doctors cannot yet predict exactly what his recovery will look like, his family understands that the road ahead could be long—possibly months or even more than a year.

But this weekend, Weston began showing signs that his loved ones had been praying to see. ❤️

At first, he opened his eyes once.

Then he did it again.

Now, his family says he is opening them regularly.

He has also coughed, allowing doctors to remove some of the support surrounding him. A CT scan showed no new abnormalities, giving his family another reason to remain hopeful.

There have still been difficult moments. Weston experienced a couple of brief seizures, and doctors continue to monitor his brain closely. He has undergone an MRI, which his family hopes will provide a clearer understanding of his condition and what his recovery may involve.

While Weston remains the center of everyone’s attention, his mother is also fighting her own battle.

Carissa experienced another seizure after being hospitalized following the crash. Her family says that episode helped doctors better understand what may have happened before the vehicle entered the pond.

She was also injured in the accident. On Friday night, her shoulder came out of its socket, sending her back to the emergency room for several more hours.

For any mother, enduring that pain while her baby is critically ill would be unimaginable.

Yet now, Carissa has something she desperately needed: the chance to lie beside her son again.

“I miss him with my entire heart,” she wrote, while expressing graтιтude that Weston is receiving care at Helen DeVos.
