Convicted “ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool k#ller” Wade Wilson has continued to attract attention from a disturbing number of female admirers despite being on d#ath row for the 2019 k#llings of Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz. The phenomenon has sparked renewed discussion about why some people become fascinated with individuals convicted of serious violent crimes.
A new Paramount+ docuseries, “Handsome Devil, Charming K#ller,” explores this unsettling phenomenon, examining Wilson’s public image and the attention he has received from female admirers. The series also features interviews that attempt to understand why some people perceive him as a misunderstood or charismatic “bad boy” despite the serious crimes for which he was convicted.
Clinical psychologist Dr. Jamie Zuckerman explains that the attraction to so-called “bad boys” can sometimes be influenced by romanticized portrayals in popular culture, as well as the belief that someone dangerous or troubled can somehow be changed or “fixed.” In Wilson’s case, reports of continued contact from female fans have made the phenomenon even more striking, with some admirers reportedly reaching out to him while he remains behind bars.
The contrast becomes even more disturbing when viewed alongside accounts from people who knew Wilson personally. An ex-girlfriend has described frightening experiences, offering a very different picture from the charismatic image some admirers appear to have created around him.
Wilson’s case has therefore become about more than the crimes themselves. It has also raised uncomfortable questions about the way society sometimes turns notorious criminals into objects of fascination, particularly when media coverage focuses on appearance, personality or perceived charm.
For the victims’ families, however, the reality remains far removed from that image. Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz were real people whose lives were taken in 2019, while Wilson remains incarcerated under a d#ath sentence.
The phenomenon surrounding his female admirers continues to raise a difficult question: Why can some people become fascinated by individuals whose real-life actions are so far removed from the romanticized image created around them?
