Elis and Eloá Lima Carneiro were born prematurely in Brazil in May 2021. At just a few months old, their family began noticing that something was different. Their hair was thinning, their skin was changing, and they struggled to gain weight. 💔

After months of medical appointments, the twins were diagnosed with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, an extremely rare genetic condition that causes the body to age much faster during childhood.

At three years old, the sisters were only about 60 centimeters tall and weighed just a few kilograms. Yet their minds continued to develop like other children their age. They learned to sit, speak little words, take steps, enjoy cartoons — and, most importantly, celebrate each new birthday together. 🌷👧👧

Their mother, Elismar, chose not to hide her daughters’ journey. She began sharing their everyday lives online, and millions of people followed along. The attention brought messages of love, donations for their care, and hope for access to treatment such as lonafarnib. ✨

Their diagnosis may have placed limits on their bodies, but it could never take away the love surrounding them.
