The search for Nancy Guthrie has returned to the neighborhood surrounding her Tucson home, with investigators reportedly examining desert brush behind the property months after the 84-year-old woman disappeared.

A neighbor in the Catalina Foothills told Fox News that she saw investigators back in the area in early August, searching through brush several months after Guthrie vanished. The reported activity came shortly before the six-month anniversary of her disappearance and raised new questions about whether investigators had received additional information or were revisiting areas that had already been searched.

The neighbor said she recognized some of the personnel from earlier law enforcement activity connected to the case and saw them examining the desert vegetation behind Guthrie’s home. However, there was an important discrepancy: a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department told Fox News that no task-force investigators had recently returned to the area, while the neighbor maintained that she had seen investigators conducting a search. The FBI also did not immediately comment on the reported activity.

Retired Pima County Sheriff’s Department lieutenant Bob Krygier, a former SWAT commander, told Fox News that there could be several explanations for investigators returning to an area that had already been searched. One possibility, he said, would be the development of a new lead or tip directing investigators toward a particular location. Another could be a decision to take another look at the area with a fresh perspective.

Weather may also have played a role. Tucson’s summer monsoon season brought heavy rainfall to the region, potentially changing the appearance of the desert landscape. Krygier said rain could move soil, vegetation and other material, potentially exposing something that had previously been hidden or altering an area investigators had already examined. He emphasized, however, that these were possible explanations rather than confirmation that investigators had discovered new evidence.

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC’s Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson-area home in the early hours of February 1, 2026. Authorities have said they believe she was taken against her will. Her personal belongings remained at the residence, and investigators treated the home as a crime scene as they began examining evidence surrounding her disappearance. The FBI later became involved in the investigation and released surveillance images showing a masked individual near Guthrie’s home.

The case has remained one of the most closely watched missing-person investigations in Arizona, in part because of the circumstances surrounding Guthrie’s disappearance and the lack of a confirmed location for her.

Investigators have examined surveillance footage, physical evidence, neighborhood activity and communications sent to the Guthrie family. Earlier in the investigation, authorities released images of a masked person captured by a security camera at the property. The individual was seen near the home and appeared to be attempting to interfere with the camera. The FBI also recovered additional information from the security system.

Ransom communications have added another complicated element to the investigation. Authorities eventually released two ransom notes connected to the case in an effort to obtain information from the public. One of the communications demanded cryptocurrency, while another contained a claim about Guthrie’s fate. Investigators have continued working to determine who wrote the messages and whether the information contained in them is reliable.

At the same time, forensic evidence has produced limited progress. In July, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said testing of hair recovered from Guthrie’s home did not identify a suspect. The sheriff said the forensic examination had been completed without producing a lead that pointed investigators toward a particular person.

There have also been disagreements and criticism surrounding the handling of the investigation. In July, FBI Director Kash Patel publicly raised concerns about the timing of the FBI’s involvement, suggesting that delays may have affected the preservation of some surveillance evidence. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department disputed the characterization and defended its handling of the early investigation.

Despite those disputes, the investigation has remained active. Sheriff Nanos said in early August that investigators believed progress was being made and that authorities had not abandoned efforts to determine what happened to Guthrie.

Another development briefly generated renewed attention later in August, when human remains were discovered in a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard, roughly 15 miles from Guthrie’s home. The discovery naturally prompted speculation because of the location and the ongoing search for Guthrie. However, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said there was no indication the remains were connected to her disappearance and said they appeared to have been at the location for an extended period.

That clarification is important because Nancy Guthrie has still not been located, and authorities have not publicly identified a suspect in the case.

More than seven months after her disappearance, the investigation therefore remains unresolved. The reported return of investigators to the desert area behind Guthrie’s home has raised questions, particularly because the search reportedly occurred after months of extreme weather and monsoon activity. But there has been no public confirmation that the renewed activity produced a breakthrough, recovered evidence or identified the person responsible.

For Guthrie’s family, the uncertainty continues to be the most painful part of the case. Savannah Guthrie and other relatives have repeatedly appealed to the public for information, while authorities continue to encourage anyone who may have seen something unusual around the time of the disappearance to come forward.
