The death of 17-year-old Cole Worthy in the horrific A66 collision is now being viewed against an increasingly disturbing backdrop. Hours before the August 22 crash, a vehicle rammed the Acklam home of Cole’s father, Gye Worthy, badly damaging the property. Police are investigating the wider chain of events, while reports have raised questions about possible links between the vehicles involved and ongoing local criminal activity.

Cole was one of five occupants of a Volkswagen Pᴀssat that travelled the wrong way along the A66 before colliding head-on with a marked police vehicle. Cole, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, Michael Cahill, 23, and Jakub Matusiak, 23, all died. PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, were also killed.

Now, the investigation is extending far beyond the crash itself.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is examining the police pursuit and the sequence of events leading to the collision. Meanwhile, Cleveland Police have made multiple arrests connected to offences surrounding the wider violence, including allegations involving organised crime, firearms and threats.

And the funerals have become another source of tension.

Authorities have warned of large crowds and potential disorder surrounding tributes to the men killed in the Pᴀssat. Schools in parts of Middlesbrough were ordered to close early ahead of Jakub Matusiak’s funeral because of safety and congestion concerns.

Cole’s own funeral is scheduled for September 9 at noon at St Bede’s Chapel, Teesside Crematorium.

The most troubling question now is not simply how the A66 crash happened—but what was unfolding in Middlesbrough during the hours before it, and whether the fatal collision was the final chapter of a much larger chain of events.

Investigators have yet to establish all the answers. Until they do, claims about gang involvement or responsibility must remain allegations—not established fact.

But one thing is already undeniable: seven lives were lost, a community has been left grieving, and the unanswered questions surrounding the A66 tragedy are growing rather than disappearing.
