Investigators Reportedly Resume Search Near Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson Home After Monsoon Rains Alter the Desert Terrain

More than seven months after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her residence in the Catalina Foothills near Tucson, Arizona, a neighbor has reported seeing FBI agents searching the brush and desert areas behind the property. The activity was observed in the period just before the case reached the six-month mark.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the evening of January 31, 2026, when family members dropped her off at her home. She was reported missing the following day after she failed to attend church. Authorities believe she was taken from the house in the early hours of February 1. Her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, co-host of NBC’s Today show, and other relatives have continued to seek answers while describing the prolonged uncertainty as a source of ongoing pain.

The neighbor, who lives only a few doors away, said she recognized the individuals from earlier law-enforcement activity connected to the investigation. A spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department stated that no members of the official task force had returned to the immediate area in recent days. The FBI did not provide an immediate response to inquiries about the reported presence.

Bob Krygier, a retired Pima County Sheriff’s lieutenant and former SWAT commander, suggested several possible explanations for a renewed search in the area. One is that investigators may have received new, viable tips that directed them to a specific location. Another is that, after more than half a year, authorities may be examining previously searched ground with a fresh set of eyes.

A third factor involves the effects of monsoon season. Krygier explained that heavy rainfall began roughly a month earlier and that large volumes of water can significantly change the desert environment. Floodwaters push rocks, soil, and debris, potentially uncovering or relocating items that were not visible during earlier examinations. In some washes, water levels can rise rapidly from a few inches to as much as 12 feet, with enough force to move vehicles, trees, and large objects. He noted that such conditions can turn a wash into a powerful current capable of carrying substantial material downstream.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has maintained that the investigation remains active and is not considered cold. Detectives continue to follow leads and are reviewing tens of thousands of video recordings. In late July, the sheriff’s office released the full contents of two notes sent in early February, hoping that distinctive patterns of wording and phrasing might be recognized by someone familiar with the writer.

As of early September 2026 — more than seven months after Nancy Guthrie disappeared — a combined reward of over $1.2 million remains available for information that helps locate her or identify those responsible.
