For Shanine Skilton-Cole, the birth of her son Cobie Miles was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of her life.
Instead, it became the beginning of a journey she could never have imagined. π
Shanine was 26 when she went into labor at 38 weeks and arrived at East Surrey Hospital in England. Doctors became concerned about Cobie’s heart rate and began closely monitoring him.
Shanine says she knew something wasn’t right.
She was worried that her baby was struggling, and she desperately wanted someone to listen to her concerns. π₯Ί
After continued concerns during labor, doctors eventually decided that an emergency C-section was necessary.
Cobie was born on July 18, 2022, weighing 7 pounds, 9 ounces.
But instead of hearing her newborn cry, Shanine watched medical teams rush to save him. π₯π
Cobie needed immediate resuscitation after being deprived of oxygen around the time of his birth. Doctors later believed a placental abruption may have contributed to the loss of oxygen.
Shanine remembers those terrifying first moments, repeatedly pleading:

Cobie was transferred into intensive medical care and began a long hospital journey.
He spent his first 84 days in the hospital before finally going home.
But his medical challenges were far from over.
He was later readmitted and remained in the hospital until he was around 10 months old. π₯β€οΈβπ©Ή
While many babies spend their first year learning to sit, crawl, babble, and explore the world, Cobie’s infancy was filled with hospital rooms, medical equipment, appointments, and constant care.
The lack of oxygen around his birth caused severe neurological damage.
Today, Cobie is 3 years old and lives with cerebral palsy. He cannot walk or speak, has difficulty holding his head independently, struggles with swallowing, and has experienced seizures. He needs around-the-clock support. πβ€οΈβπ©Ή
For his mother, watching her little boy face these challenges has been heartbreaking.
But Cobie’s story isn’t simply about the things he cannot do.
