To the public, PC Matthew Blades was known as a dedicated Cleveland Police officer who lost his life in the A66 tragedy. But to the people closest to him, he was much more than the uniform — he was a husband, a devoted father and a much-loved member of his family.

Matthew, 37, was the father of two young boys. His wife described him as her beloved husband, best friend and “the most devoted father,” saying their children would grow up knowing what an incredible father he was. His family also remembered him as an adored son, brother and uncle.

Away from policing, Matthew also gave his time to young people through football coaching. He had recently joined Seaton Carew FC and was looking forward to coaching his son, while also working with children at FC Hartlepool, where he was remembered as a role model, mentor and friend.

That side of his life has become an important part of the tributes following the A66 tragedy. Manchester United, a club Matthew was a devoted supporter of, later invited his two sons to lead the team onto the pitch at Old Trafford as mascots — a deeply personal tribute to a father whose love of the club was something he shared with his children.

For his family, Matthew’s legacy is therefore not defined only by the final moments of his life. It lives on through his children, his work with young footballers, his friendships and the people he served.
